iPhone 12 radiation: Apple responds with EU update

Apple is once again in the spotlight of European regulators. This time, it's the iPhone 12 and its radiation levels. France had already reacted in 2023 and stopped sales because the device exceeded the limits for electromagnetic radiation. Following confirmation by the European Commission, Apple is now releasing a software update for all devices in the European Union.

The iPhone 12, in its current form, does not fully meet European health standards for electromagnetic radiation. Apple has therefore announced that it will roll out a software update in all 27 member states of the European Union. This update follows months of discussions between Apple, the French authorities, and the European Commission.

Background: Dispute between Apple and France

In September 2023, France stopped selling the iPhone 12. Measurements by the national frequency agency ANFR had shown that the device's specific absorption rate (SAR) exceeded the permitted limit. This meant that the level of electromagnetic radiation absorbed by the body was higher than stipulated by European standards. Apple was ordered to correct the deficiency and to adapt all devices already sold to comply with legal requirements.

First update only for France

In response, Apple released a software update specifically for French users. This update brought the iPhone 12 into compliance with the French authorities' testing protocol. At the same time, Apple emphasized that the ANFR's testing methodology was flawed. The reason for this was that the tests did not take into account the off-body detection mechanism. This mechanism ensures that the iPhone automatically emits less radiation when it is not worn directly on the body. Apple pointed out that this feature is internationally recognized and validated.

EU Commission backs France

The European Commission examined the case and confirmed on Monday that France's measures were justified, thus retroactively legitimizing the original decision to stop iPhone 12 sales in France.

EU-wide software update announced

Apple subsequently announced that it would release the software update in all 27 EU member states in the coming weeks. This step will adjust the iPhone 12's radiation levels to comply with applicable standards throughout the European Union. Despite its ongoing criticism of the French testing methodology, Apple stated that it respects the European Commission's decision. In a statement, it said customers can continue to use their iPhone 12 without concern.

Apple follows the guidelines despite criticism

With the EU-wide update for the iPhone 12, Apple is delivering a clear response to criticism from European authorities. Although the company continues to question the testing procedures used, it is bringing its devices into line with legal requirements. This represents a uniform solution for the European market that creates legal certainty and simultaneously demonstrates to users that regulatory requirements are being consistently implemented.
