Colin Farrell slips back into the tailored suit of private detective John Sugar: Apple TV returns for the second season of his stylish neo-noir crime thriller "Sugar." The service celebrated the return with a red carpet premiere in Los Angeles – just two days before its global launch.

Following a celebrated first season, one of Apple TV's most unusual crime dramas returns. On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Apple TV celebrated the second season of "Sugar" with a premiere at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Starring and executive producer Colin Farrell, a former Oscar nominee, led the lineup. The official premiere is imminent and joins Apple's packed schedule for June 2026.

When season 2 will be released

The season kicks off with a single episode on Friday, June 19, 2026. A new episode will then be released every Friday until August 7. The second season comprises a total of eight episodes, which will be available simultaneously worldwide on Apple TV.

The plot of the second season

"Sugar" tells a contemporary, idiosyncratic take on one of the most iconic genres in film and television history: the private detective story. At its center is once again John Sugar, the iconic Los Angeles private detective and film buff played by Farrell. Following the events of the first season, he has remained on Earth, hoping to find his sister – and simultaneously takes on a new missing person case: the search for the older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer.

What begins as a manageable assignment escalates into a sinister, citywide conspiracy. Sugar must not only solve the case but also come to terms with himself and answer a crucial question: How far is he willing to go to do the right thing?

Cast and creators

Alongside Colin Farrell in the lead role, the second season introduces a number of new faces. The cast includes Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, and Sasha Calle, complemented by Shea Whigham as a special guest star.

Sam Catlin is the showrunner and executive producer, producing the series under his label Short Drive Entertainment. Other executive producers include Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg, as well as Colin Farrell, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich. "Sugar" was created by Mark Protosevich.

A celebrated first season as a foundation

The second season builds on a strong first season. The first season was considered by many to be one of the outstanding neo-noir thrillers of recent years and was particularly praised for its surprising plot twist. It is now available in its entirety and worldwide on Apple TV – fittingly for a service that recently even surpassed Netflix in a quality ranking.

Apple TV's crime summer is gaining momentum

With the return of "Sugar," Apple TV is making a strong statement for the summer. The weekly release schedule starting June 19th will keep the series in the spotlight for weeks – a proven strategy the service uses to promote its flagship titles and maintain the excitement well into the busiest programming period of midsummer.
