macOS 11 Big Sur: 4K Netflix streaming requires T2 Mac

Wroclaw, Poland - OCT 23, 2019: Man with Netflix logo on screen. Netflix is the most popular video streaming platform.

Netflix claims to have the largest 4K media library in the world. But not all Mac users will be able to access it under macOS 11 Big Sur - Hollywood could be to blame.

Apple will be making macOS 11 Big Sur available to all users in the next few weeks. This will make it possible to stream 4K content in Safari for the first time – including on Netflix. But there is a catch. The streaming provider has surprisingly published a support document that explains the requirement. It says in it:

Netflix is available in Ultra HD on Mac computers. To stream in Ultra HD you will need:

A Mac computer with MacOS 11.0 Big Sur installed.

The latest version of the Safari browser

Choose a Mac computer from 2018 with an Apple T2 security chip

A 60Hz 4K capable display (with HDCP 2.2 connection for external display).

Apple is not to blame

This means that in order to access 4K content via Safari, users need a Mac with a T2 security chip. This announcement not only causes confusion but also anger among fans. Unfortunately, Netflix itself has not given a reason for the whole thing. However, various discussions, including on Reddit, have provided an explanation for this. Hollywood usually insists on stronger protection against piracy - Digital Rights Management (DRM). However, this also requires specific hardware encryption. Accordingly, not all Windows users can access 4K content - Kaby Lake or newer is required here. This is why Apple's T2 security chip also comes into play, as it has DRM. Accordingly, fans should not blame Apple but Hollywood. For your information: Below we list all Mac devices that have Apple's T2 security chip:

  • iMac 2020
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac Pro 2019
  • Mac mini 2018
  • MacBook Air from 2018 or newer
  • MacBook Pro from 2018 or newer

In addition to the Mac devices mentioned above, macOS 11 Big Sur is of course also required. The final version of the new operating system could be released as early as this month – a specific date is of course not known. Do you already know the latest Amazon Echo?
