Apple released a number of new beta versions for developers this evening, including iOS 13.5, iPadOS 13.5, tvOS 13.4.5, watchOS 6.2.5 and Xcode 11.5.

Apple has now released the fourth beta for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS and watchOS and the second preview for Xcode for developers. The updates are available for download as usual in the Developer Center or alternatively over-the-air. The current beta phase originally started with iOS 13.4.5. But last week Apple decided to change the name to iOS 13.5. A fundamental change was made in the area of interfaces (APIs). This should enable COVID-19 contact tracing in the future.

To mark the occasion, Apple has also rolled out a new preview of Xcode 11.5, which contains the updated iOS SDK. Important: The new API is only available to developers from official health authorities. In addition to the new API, there are other new features in iOS 13.5 / iOS 13.4.5. You can find out what they are below.

  • iOS 13.5: Apple adds new option to FaceTime
  • iOS 13.4.5: Post to Instagram from Apple Music
  • COVID-19: Face ID recognizes masks under iOS 13.5
  • COVID-19: How to disable contact tracing on iOS 13.5

Are you also a beta tester and would like to exchange ideas with other testers? Then you could join our Telegram group (Apfelpatient – Beta Workshop) might be just the thing for you.

Notice – As usual, a preview should not be installed on an actively used iPhone or iPad, as these are usually quite unstable and buggy – we recommend using a second device for this. (Photo by Wrightstudio / Bigstockphoto)

Apple devices here aren't test units for a fortnight but everyday tools: from the iPhone to the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac through to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it goes live.
