Apple has released a new update for its Final Cut Pro apps and the Final Cut Camera app. This brings full support for the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro for the first time. The new features are designed to help video creators—from beginners to professionals—who value maximum control and quality.

At last week's "Awe Dropping" event, Apple unveiled the new iPhone models. It became clear that the devices are not only equipped with powerful hardware, but are also specifically optimized for video recording. Today's updates to Final Cut Pro on Mac and iPad, as well as the Final Cut Camera app for iPhone, continue this consistent focus.

New camera features in the iPhone 17

One of the most striking features is the Center Stage camera, which utilizes the square sensor of the front camera. The aspect ratio automatically adjusts, even when switching to landscape mode. Rotating the iPhone is unnecessary, making recordings more secure. This feature is available in all new iPhones, including the base model iPhone 17. The iPhone 17 Pro goes a step further and offers ProRes RAW. This creates a more flexible post-production process, which is particularly interesting for professional video artists. Genlock support is also available, enabling techniques like time splicing or even the well-known bullet time effect—with the appropriate additional hardware.

Final Cut Pro 11.2 for Mac

The new version for Mac gives Final Cut Pro more control over ProRes RAW video. Exposure, color temperature, hue, and demosaicing can be customized, provided a supported iPhone model is used. Furthermore, Apple Log 2 footage can be edited with the appropriate LUT to ensure the color accuracy of the original scene is as high as possible. The update also includes general stability and performance improvements.

Final Cut Pro 2.3 for iPad

The iPad version also offers the same expanded control options for ProRes RAW videos. Apple Log 2 can be faithfully played back and edited using the LUT. Also new is a menu bar that makes it easier to access app commands and shortcuts. A swipe from the top edge or the use of a trackpad is all it takes. iPadOS 26 is required.

The Camera app has also been significantly enhanced. It now allows ProRes RAW recording in Open Gate for maximum resolution and improved editing performance. It can also record in ProRes or HEVC with Apple Log 2—with high dynamic range and an expanded color space. New timecode options such as "Time of Day," "Record Run," and external timecode help precisely identify footage. Multiple video sources can be synchronized with frame-accurate alignment using a compatible sync generator. The 200mm telephoto lens with 8x zoom can also be directly controlled for detailed shots. The front-facing camera automatically adjusts to vertical or horizontal orientation, regardless of how the iPhone is held. However, these features are only available on supported iPhone models.

Professional workflows directly with the iPhone 17

With the updates to Final Cut Pro and the Final Cut Camera app, Apple demonstrates how closely hardware and software can work together. The combination of the new iPhone 17 models and the redesigned apps enables professional workflows that were previously only possible with dedicated camera equipment. This once again positions Apple as a major player in mobile video production, creating tools that are just as suitable for quick clips as they are for complex film projects.
