M2 Mac mini Service Program

If you have an M2 Mac mini and are wondering why it suddenly won't boot, there's now an official answer. Apple has launched a new service program because a few models have a power issue. The repair is free – but only under certain conditions. Find out all the details here.

The M2 Mac mini is a compact desktop computer with plenty of power. Since its launch in 2023, it has proven itself a favorite with many users. Now, there are isolated reports of a technical issue: certain devices can no longer be turned on. Apple has set up a service program to offer free repairs to affected users.

What's the problem with the M2 Mac mini?

According to Apple, the issue affects a very small percentage of Mac mini (2023) models with the M2 chip. The affected devices were manufactured between June 16, 2024, and November 23, 2024. These devices may suddenly fail to turn on. Apple does not provide a specific technical reason for the issue. All that is clear is that it is a power-related issue.

  • Important: Only M2 Mac mini devices from the specified production period are affected. Other models—such as those with the M1 chip or M2 Pro—are not included in this service program.

How to find out if your device is one of them

To check if your Mac mini is eligible for the service program, you need to enter your device's serial number on the Apple website . There's a form there that will immediately tell you whether your model is eligible. You can find the serial number in macOS under "About This Mac" or directly on the bottom of the device.

This is what Apple offers as part of the program

If your device is eligible, you have two options for repair:

  • You can make an appointment at an Apple Store
  • Or you can take the device to an authorized Apple Service Provider

In both cases, the repair is free – provided there is no other damage. If your Mac mini has other defects that prevent repair, Apple states that these must be addressed first. This may incur additional costs not covered by the program.

Why you should take care of it as soon as possible

Even if your device is currently still working, if it belongs to the affected series, it's a good idea to use the repair service as soon as possible. While the program is still new, such service promotions usually only run for a limited time. Apple hasn't specified a time limit yet, but experience has shown that such programs usually last for one to two years from launch.

Free repair for affected M2 Mac mini models

Apple's new service program is responding to a hardware issue with the M2 Mac mini. Only a few units from a narrowly defined production period between June and November 2024 are affected. If your device is one of them, Apple will cover the entire repair cost – provided there is no additional damage. You must check the serial number on the Apple website and schedule a repair appointment. This ensures that your Mac mini will function reliably again. (Image: Apple)
