Apple declares iPhone XS a vintage device: All the details

Apple has officially classified the iPhone XS as vintage. This means the device is now in a transitional phase during which it can still be repaired, but only under certain conditions. Anyone still using the iPhone XS or considering buying it used should take a closer look now.

The iPhone XS was introduced in September 2018. It was the direct successor to the iPhone X, but brought only modest improvements. These included the faster A12 Bionic chip, a slightly improved camera, and support for dual SIM with eSIM. One year after its launch, it was officially discontinued by Apple, but remained available for some time through third-party retailers. Now, the iPhone XS has reached the five-year mark and is now considered a vintage device.

What does “vintage” mean at Apple?

Apple considers a device vintage if it hasn't been sold for at least five years. This status brings with it restrictions on support. Specifically, for the iPhone XS, this means:

  • Repairs are still possible, but only as long as spare parts are still available.
  • Neither Apple Stores nor authorized service providers are obligated to perform all repairs.
  • Apple's technical support is gradually being reduced.

In two years, the iPhone XS will reach "obsolete" status. At that point, Apple will completely discontinue support. It will no longer supply replacement parts and will no longer offer service.

Differences to the iPhone XS Max

The larger sibling, the iPhone XS Max with a 6.5-inch display, was already classified as vintage in November 2024. Technically, it was very similar to the XS, only with a larger screen and a larger battery. The reason Apple didn't add the smaller XS model to the list until June 2025 is because it was on sale at some retailers for longer, thus starting the five-year period later.

Other devices affected

With the update to the vintage list, Apple also reclassified the 5th generation iPad. This model was upgraded from "vintage" to "obsolete." This means that all official Apple support for this device is no longer available. Repairs are also no longer possible, even if spare parts are available. Apple also advises owners of a 2018 Mac mini to check the current support status. This model was already classified as vintage several months ago. Why Apple took this step so early is unclear—it usually takes longer to classify devices as vintage. Apple itself does not provide a detailed explanation.

What should you do now?

If you're still using the iPhone XS, there's no need to act immediately. The device remains functional and can still be used in everyday life. However, you should be aware that repairs are no longer guaranteed. If your iPhone XS is damaged, it could become more difficult or expensive to get it repaired. Replacement parts are becoming scarcer, and the price on the used market usually drops once Apple phases out support. If you've been thinking about upgrading, now's a good time. Models like the iPhone 13, 14, 15, or 16 offer significantly more performance, better cameras, and long-term support for future iOS versions. If regular security updates, new features, or a current battery are important to you, the switch is worth it.

iPhone XS: Support is ending – what you need to know now

The iPhone XS is now an official vintage device. Apple only offers limited support and no longer provides a warranty for repairs. In two years, it will be definitively classified as obsolete, and that will also be the last opportunity to have it officially repaired. Anyone still using the device should take precautions or consider alternatives. Technically, it remains usable, but it will become more difficult to maintain or resell it long-term.
