Apple has released a new firmware for the AirTag 2. It's the second firmware update since its market launch in early 2026 – and follows a now familiar pattern without official release notes: a few weeks of patience, a gradual rollout, and no option for manual installation.
On May 26, 2026, Apple released a new firmware version for the AirTag 2. Version 3.0.49 replaces the previous version 3.0.45, which was released in early April and included a revised warning tone for stalking protection. Apple has not yet published specific release notes for version 3.0.49. Experience shows that minor firmware updates typically involve bug fixes and underlying optimizations that are barely noticeable in everyday use but improve system stability.
What is known about the new firmware
Firmware version 3.0.49 is the second official software update for the AirTag 2 since its launch. Apple typically doesn't provide extensive documentation for such updates – and this time is no exception, with no detailed release notes. What can be deduced from this is limited to two observations: First, it's likely a maintenance update delivering specific improvements. Second, the relatively short interval since version 3.0.45 is consistent with a stabilization update, a common practice for first-generation Apple devices.
The last major feature change came in early April. At that time, Apple revised the warning tone that sounds when an unknown AirTag is detected nearby. The goal was to be able to locate unknown trackers more quickly using precision search. Whether version 3.0.49 builds on this concept or addresses a different detail cannot be definitively determined without release notes.
Gradual rollout without manual intervention
AirTag firmware updates have followed the same pattern for years. Apple gradually rolls out new versions to a growing portion of the global user base – starting with a small percentage on the first day and increasing distribution in the following weeks. Users who want to check if their tracker already has the new version can do so via the "Find My" app.
Manual installation or a forced update process is not possible. For the AirTag to receive the new firmware, it must be within Bluetooth range of an iPhone linked to the user's Apple account. The update then occurs in the background. Users who wish to speed up the process can deliberately place the AirTag near the iPhone – however, this is the only way to influence the update.
Hardware whose software is only just beginning to take shape
With each firmware iteration, it becomes clear how much the AirTag 2 benefits from software improvements. Apple significantly redesigned the hardware itself for the second generation, as iFixit's teardown revealed in early 2026. In particular, the redesigned speaker and improved precision search give Apple the flexibility to further refine individual features via firmware updates.
That's precisely why minor version jumps like 3.0.49 might seem unspectacular to many users at first glance, but ultimately contribute to the product's maturity. With the second generation of AirTag, Apple is following a path that was already evident with the first AirTag: many small steps, but with a clear direction. What exactly 3.0.49 brings could become clear either in a subsequent Apple support document or in initial community observations once the firmware has been widely distributed.
Current offer: AirTag 4-pack reduced
Anyone who doesn't yet own an AirTag 2 or wants to expand their collection can currently find an attractive offer. The AirTag 4-pack is reduced from €119 to €85 on Amazon – a price advantage of around 29 percent compared to the RRP. In practice, four trackers cover typical use cases simultaneously: keys, backpack, suitcase, and car can all be tracked in the "Where's?" network at the same time. How long the offer remains available depends on current stock levels. (Image: Shutterstock / Masarik)
