The next iPad Pro won't be released as soon as some had expected. Although Apple has several product announcements planned for this week, the professional tablet will not be part of these presentations. Instead, the next update is expected in early 2027.
The latest information comes from Mark Gurman's "Power On" newsletter, which he writes for Bloomberg. In it, Gurman answered a reader's question about the next iPad Pro and its expected release date.
He is considered well-connected and has frequently made accurate predictions about Apple products in the past. This time, too, he realistically assesses expectations and dampens speculation about a short-term update.
No new iPad Pro before spring 2027
Those expecting an imminent unveiling will have to wait. According to Gurman, the next iPad Pro won't appear until spring 2027. This estimate aligns with the previous release schedule. The iPad Pro follows an upgrade cycle of approximately one and a half years between generations.
The latest version with the M5 chip was released in October 2025. Extrapolating the usual release cycle, this suggests a market launch in early 2027. An earlier date would therefore be unusual. While Apple will be announcing new products this week, the iPad Pro is not among them.
Long waiting time, but hardly any external changes
Besides the later release date, Gurman also tempers expectations of major innovations. Despite the long wait, there will be no radical design changes.
The current slim design was first introduced in May 2024 with the M4 chip. When it was updated to the M5 chip in October 2025, the external appearance remained unchanged. Instead, internal components were modified.
Apple often pursues a strategy of maintaining a successful design across multiple generations. Therefore, it is not surprising that the model released in early 2027 is also expected to remain largely unchanged visually.
Technical upgrade: M6 chip expected
However, an upgrade is expected internally. The upcoming iPad Pro is expected to be equipped with an M6 chip.
Details regarding the architecture or specific performance figures are not yet known. However, it is likely that Apple will once again improve both processing power and energy efficiency. The generational shift from the M5 to the M6 is therefore expected to represent the key performance upgrade.
Gurman points out that the internal update might be larger than usual, even if little changes are visible externally.
Vapor chamber cooling as the most important innovation
The most interesting technical change apparently concerns thermal management. Apple is reportedly working on integrating a so-called vapor chamber cooling system into the iPad Pro.
This technology is already used in the iPhone 17 Pro. The goal is more efficient cooling of the main chip.
A vapor chamber distributes generated heat more evenly over a larger area. This allows the processor to operate at high performance for longer periods without thermal throttling. Specifically, this means:
- more stable continuous performance under high load
- lower temperature peaks
- less performance reduction due to heat generation
Effective cooling plays a crucial role, especially in demanding applications like video editing, 3D rendering, or graphics-intensive processes. Improved heat dissipation could allow the iPad Pro to maintain its maximum performance for longer.
Gurman believes it is likely that this change will be introduced with the model in early 2027.
iPad Pro 2027: Technical optimization instead of design revolution
In summary, the 2027 iPad Pro is expected to have a rather conservative external update. The design is likely to remain identical to the current generation.
The main innovations take place internally: a possible M6 chip and the introduction of vapor chamber cooling, which improves performance stability and reduces thermal throttling.
Mark Gurman's report is considered credible and aligns with similar rumors that also suggest a limited external update. Everything currently points to Apple focusing primarily on technical optimization rather than visible changes for the 2027 iPad Pro. (Image: Shutterstock / Hemin Xylan)
