MacBook Air with M5: All the details about the upcoming update

The MacBook Air has been one of Apple's best-selling laptops for years. While public attention often focuses on the more powerful MacBook Pro, Apple is simultaneously working on the next generation of its most popular notebook. A major redesign isn't planned; instead, a noticeable performance boost is the main focus. Indications are mounting that the new MacBook Air will be released later this year.

Apple follows a clear strategy with the MacBook Air. Instead of introducing new designs or additional features every year, the focus is on continuous technical improvements. This strategy ensures predictable updates and a stable product line. Apple will continue this approach with the upcoming MacBook Air, concentrating almost exclusively on the internal hardware.

Technical development instead of design change

The M5 chip as a central upgrade

The new MacBook Air is expected to be equipped with the M5 chip. This processor is the direct successor to the current M4 and offers significantly improved computing and graphics performance. Apple has already introduced the M5 in the MacBook Pro, where it particularly emphasized the advancements in artificial intelligence.

Apple itself advertises the M5 with four times the GPU computing power for AI compared to the M4. This is made possible by several technical improvements:

  • a next-generation GPU
  • a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core
  • a more powerful CPU
  • a faster Neural Engine
  • a higher uniform storage bandwidth

Benchmark results support these claims. In direct comparison with the M4, the M5 shows significant performance gains:

  • Single-core CPU performance is about 9 to 10 percent higher.
  • Multi-core CPU performance is approximately 19 percent faster.
  • The GPU performance is particularly noticeable, with an increase of approximately 37 percent.

This brings the MacBook Air closer in performance to previous Pro models without losing its focus on efficiency and mobility.

The proven design remains unchanged

Aside from the new chip, no major changes are expected for the upcoming MacBook Air. Apple is likely to retain the existing design. The familiar display sizes will also remain unchanged. The model will continue to be offered in 13-inch and 15-inch versions.

The form factor, casing, weight, and overall design will remain identical to the current model. Anyone familiar with the current MacBook Air will immediately recognize the new model.

Possible market launch

Apple has not yet announced an official date. However, previous releases provide a clear indication of the timeframe. The M4 MacBook Air was released in March of last year, and the M3 MacBook Air in March 2024. Based on this, a market launch in the first half of the year is considered very likely.

Apple's long-term update strategy

The annual updates may seem unremarkable at first glance, but they represent an important shift. Since the beginning of the Apple Silicon era in 2020, Apple has been regularly updating almost all Mac models. This close integration of hardware and software was not feasible in the days of Intel processors.

The MacBook Air in particular benefits from this strategy. Performance improvements are implemented continuously, while energy efficiency and everyday usability are maintained. This ensures a clear product development without major disruptions.

The MacBook Air remains true to itself

The new MacBook Air represents evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes. The M5 chip delivers a significant performance boost, while the design and dimensions remain unchanged. The planned market launch in the first half of the year fits within Apple's established update cycles. Those who don't want to wait for the new generation will find the current M4 MacBook Air a mature alternative, made even more attractive by price reductions.
