An internal and previously unpublished piece of iOS code is currently fueling new speculation about the future of iOS. The code originates from an internal version of iOS 26 and contains numerous references to features that Apple is apparently preparing for iOS 26.4, iOS 27, and even iOS 28. While such leaks don't guarantee a firm release schedule, they offer a relatively concrete glimpse into the direction iOS might take in the coming years.

The latest information stems from reports by Filipe Espósito (MacWorld), who has previously investigated internal Apple leaks. He had previously identified new features for AirTag 2 and several upgrades for Apple's Studio Display in the same code. This latest report focuses on long-term planned iOS features that will be rolled out across multiple versions. These include artificial intelligence, security, media offerings, health, and improved interoperability between Apple devices.

iOS 26.4: Specific new features in preparation

The leaked code for iOS 26.4 lists several clearly identifiable new features. A key element is the long-awaited AI upgrade for Siri. Apple is apparently working on a significantly enhanced version of the voice assistant, one that follows more modern AI approaches. Details about the exact functionality are not included in the code, but this indication is considered one of the strongest pieces of evidence for a major Siri update.

Another new feature concerns the iCloud Keychain. In the future, credit cards will also be able to be stored in third-party apps. This would mean the keychain would no longer be limited to Safari or Apple's own services, but would play a greater role system-wide in the secure management of sensitive payment data.

The Freeform app is also being expanded. The code shows that folder functionality is planned. This will allow for better content organization in the future, which is particularly helpful for large projects or collaborative work.

The Apple TV app also features a "Sports Level" as a functional indicator. This suggests a new category or separate offering for sports content. Whether this is a separate subscription or a new sorting option remains unclear.

In addition, Apple is working on enhanced security features. Before logging into an Apple account or iCloud, the integrity of the device will be more thoroughly checked. The goal is apparently to better detect and prevent manipulation or unauthorized access.

iOS 27: Improvements for photos and AirPods

The report mentions several feature flags for iOS 27 that are linked to the Photos app. Apple is reportedly planning improved collections that will organize photos even more intelligently. This likely involves further developed automatic grouping, although specific details are not clearly described in the code.

Also planned for iOS 27 is a new pairing system for AirPods. Although the current pairing process is already very straightforward, Apple is apparently working on technical improvements behind the scenes. These are intended to make pairing even faster and more reliable, especially when switching between multiple Apple devices.

iOS 28: Health becomes a further focus

iOS 28 is also mentioned in the leaked code. A key focus is on new metrics for sleep tracking with the Apple Watch. In addition to existing data, time spent in bed will also be recorded. This information could help to more accurately classify sleep phases and improve overall analysis.

Furthermore, there are indications that the Health app will arrive on the Mac with macOS 28. This would make health data fully available on the desktop for the first time and enable cross-platform use.

Other planned features without a fixed iOS assignment

In addition to the clearly assigned features, the code mentions further functions that are not yet assigned to any specific iOS version, but will very likely appear in one of the upcoming updates.

This includes improved Find My support for AirPods. A feature called "Precise Outdoor Location" suggests particularly accurate outdoor location tracking. This feature may only be available for AirPods Pro 3.

Furthermore, a redesigned health app is mentioned. Plans include a new category layout and simplified data entry. The aim is apparently a clearer presentation and faster daily use.

Key trends for iOS 26.4, iOS 27 and iOS 28

The latest leaks provide a comprehensive insight into Apple's plans for iOS 26.4, iOS 27, and iOS 28. The focus is on expanding AI capabilities, enhancing security, introducing new media offerings, and strengthening health and device collaboration. However, it remains unclear how current the analyzed code actually is. Apple is known for postponing or quickly removing features. Therefore, all the mentioned innovations should be considered preliminary. Nevertheless, the information clearly reveals Apple's priorities for the future of iOS.
