Apple's new design era is generating internal enthusiasm despite major upheaval

Apple is currently undergoing a period marked by several personnel changes. The departure of Alan Dye, the former Vice President of Human Interface Design, has triggered a particularly strong reaction. At the same time, this change heralds a new design era under Steve Lemay, which has been received surprisingly positively internally. An experienced Apple designer has publicly expressed his support, demonstrating the immense potential of this new era.

Several executives have left Apple in a short period of time. Besides Alan Dye, this also affected former AI chief John Giannandrea, as well as Katherine Adams and Lisa Jackson. Such upheavals usually create uncertainty. This time, however, the mood is unusually optimistic, especially within the design team. The positive response to Lemay's new role indicates that Apple is planning for a clear, fresh direction internally. The words of a long-time designer clearly underscore this.

One design trend is gone, a new focus is emerging.

The news of Dye's move to Meta was first reported by Bloomberg. His departure coincided with other changes within the company, but the design department garnered the most public attention. According to John Gruber, several internal sources were clearly relieved by the decision to appoint Lemay to head Human Interface Design. Some were even said to be enthusiastic.

That this enthusiasm wasn't just confined to behind the scenes was demonstrated by a public post from Apple designer Chan Karunamuni. He wrote on X that he couldn't be more excited about the new design era under Lemay. This comment stands out because Karunamuni isn't just a team member, but someone with a long and deep connection to Apple's design culture.

Why Karunamuni's assessment carries weight

Karunamuni has worked at Apple for about 15 years and during that time has contributed to key concepts that have fundamentally shaped the use of the iPhone and iOS. His contributions include the gesture-based user interface of the iPhone X, Dynamic Island, the new flashlight in iOS 18, and several core features of the Liquid Glass design.

The gestures of the iPhone X marked the beginning of a new control logic without a Home button. Dynamic Island changed the role of the top of the screen, making it an active interface element. The Liquid Glass design provided a more modern, smoother, and technically sophisticated appearance for many UI areas. The new flashlight in iOS 18 is also an example of how small functions can be visibly improved through thoughtful design.

When someone with this track record publicly emphasizes how positively the upcoming era under Lemay is viewed, it shows that internal expectations are high. His statement doesn't come across as a diplomatic comment, but rather as genuine confidence.

What the new design era promises

Steve Lemay is no newcomer to the design team. He has worked in a leading position on Apple's visual and functional design language for many years. His style is considered clear, structured, and strongly user-centric. This partly explains why long-time designers apparently see the change in leadership more as an opportunity than a risk.

Karunamuni has known Lemay as his superior for a decade and a half. The fact that he describes this new phase as particularly exciting suggests that Lemay is perceived internally as someone who brings clear ideas and a motivating work ethic. At a time when several departments are being realigned, this could be a significant advantage.

The starting signal for a new design phase at Apple

The change at the top of Human Interface Design is not just an organizational step, but also a sign of a new design direction at Apple. The positive feedback from within the design team, especially from Chan Karunamuni, shows that there is a great deal of internal confidence in Steve Lemay. The fact that a designer who contributed to some of the most impressive UI elements in recent Apple history so clearly welcomes this development speaks to an exciting future. This new design era at Apple could be among the most innovative in recent years. (Image: Shutterstock / slvn_an)
