F1 The Movie is already one of the biggest cinematic events of 2025. The Apple Original Films film, directed by Joseph Kosinski of "Top Gun: Maverick," combines spectacular racing scenes with emotional depth and a star-studded cast led by Brad Pitt. Following a record-breaking theatrical release, F1 The Movie will stream worldwide on Apple TV on Friday, December 12, 2025.
Since its theatrical release on June 27, 2025, F1 The Movie has dominated the global box office charts. The film debuted at number one, broke numerous records, and grossed over $629 million worldwide. This makes it not only the most successful sports film of all time, but also the most successful original film of the year. It also enjoyed the best opening for an original live-action film in the US in five years and became Brad Pitt's most successful film ever. With an A rating from CinemaScore and a 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, F1 The Movie is being hailed by critics and fans alike as the most authentic racing film of all time. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer spoke about the worldwide success and the upcoming streaming premiere:
It's been truly thrilling to see how audiences around the world have embraced 'F1 The Movie' in cinemas. Now, thanks to the unparalleled global reach of Apple TV, we're thrilled to bring this thrilling cinematic experience to fans everywhere. Working with Apple and Formula 1 has been an incredible journey, and we're proud that even more viewers from all corners of the globe will be able to experience the breathtaking action and passion that defines 'F1 The Movie'.
A look at the plot of F1 The Movie
The film centers on Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt. Hayes was considered Formula 1®'s brightest talent in the 1990s until a serious accident nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he leads a restless life as a nomadic racing driver when he is contacted by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem. Cervantes owns a small, struggling Formula 1® team that is on the verge of collapse. Hoping to save his team, he convinces Hayes to return to Formula 1® for one last major comeback.
Alongside Joshua Pearce, an ambitious young driver played by Damson Idris, Hayes returns to the track. But the road back to the top is harder than he imagined. Between team spirit, rivalry, and personal redemption, F1 The Movie shows that the biggest enemy is often within one's own team – and that true redemption cannot be achieved alone.
A production with a star cast and real racing fever
In addition to Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and Damson Idris, F1 The Movie also stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Kim Bodnia. Filming took place during real Grand Prix weekends, lending the film an unparalleled authenticity. Some scenes were shot in the middle of Formula 1 racing, with the film crew working alongside real racing teams.
Director Joseph Kosinski led the production alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, seven-time Formula 1® World Champion Lewis Hamilton, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Chad Oman. The screenplay was written by Ehren Kruger, based on a story by Kosinski and Kruger.
An experienced creative team worked behind the camera: Cinematographer Claudio Miranda provided dynamic racing shots, production designer Mark Tildesley and editor Stephen Mirrione brought visual precision and excitement to the picture, while costume designer Julian Day and casting director Lucy Bevan were responsible for the authentic look and casting. Hans Zimmer composed a score for the soundtrack that perfectly captures the speed, power, and emotion of motorsport.
The soundtrack F1® The Album becomes a global music phenomenon
F1 The Movie not only conquered the cinemas, but also the music charts. The official soundtrack, F1® The Album, became a worldwide hit. Over 650,000 copies sold and more than a billion streams make the album one of the most successful film soundtracks of the year. Seven of the top ten tracks on the Billboard Top Movie Songs charts come from this album.
The soundtrack is led by "Just Keep Watching" by Tate McRae, which has already received two MTV Video Music Award nominations. With over four billion views on short-form video platforms, F1® The Album has become one of the defining musical moments of 2025 and a central part of the film's cultural impact.
