With the update to iOS 26, Apple is expanding the charging capabilities of the iPhone 16. For the first time, the new Qi 2.2 standard is supported, which enables wireless charging with up to 25 watts for third-party chargers. This opens up the system, which was previously limited to Apple's own MagSafe accessories.
Wireless charging has a long history at Apple. The feature was first introduced with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, as the glass back provided the technical foundation for it. The feature really took off with MagSafe on the iPhone 12: A magnetic ring ensures the device is perfectly aligned with charging pads. With MagSafe, Apple also took a step toward faster wireless charging, although so far only via its own charging accessories. With iOS 26, this limitation changes.
MagSafe so far: 25 watts only with Apple
Until now, the iPhone 16 could be wirelessly charged with up to 25 watts using Apple's original MagSafe charger. This speed is noticeable in practice, as a charge from 0 to 50 percent can be achieved within 30 minutes. In everyday use, this means that even short charging breaks are sufficient to get the iPhone ready for use again. The downside, however, was that this charging speed was only achievable with Apple's own accessories.
Qi 2.2 in iOS 26: new possibilities
With iOS 26, the iPhone 16 becomes fully compatible with the new Qi 2.2 standard for the first time. This standard removes previous restrictions and allows third-party providers to offer wireless charging at up to 25 watts. The beta version of the system already shows that the feature is active, although Apple has not yet released an official announcement. All iPhone 16 variants benefit from this innovation – with one exception: the iPhone 16e retains a lower charging power. For the regular models, however, this means that the selection of charging accessories will be significantly broader in the future.
New third-party chargers
Since Qi 2.2 is still new, there are only a few products on the market that are certified for it. One of the first manufacturers is Belkin, which has announced a range of Qi 2 25W charging stations. UGREEN is also early adopters and offers a MagSafe power bank that also relies on the new technology. The product description notes that an update to iOS 26 is required to use the full 25 watts. On older iPhones, however, performance remains limited. Models with MagSafe support reach a maximum of 15 watts, while the smaller iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini versions reach a maximum of 12 watts.
Practical advantages
The integration of Qi 2.2 into iOS 26 brings tangible benefits. Third-party chargers will soon be able to deliver the same performance as Apple's own accessories. This creates more flexibility in selection, lowers prices through greater competition, and also facilitates fast charging on the go – for example, with power banks or car chargers. Furthermore, the new standard is future-proof in the long term, as it is likely to become widespread across the industry.

More freedom when charging with iOS 26
With iOS 26, Apple is focusing on greater openness in wireless charging. This means the iPhone 16 can be quickly charged not only with its own MagSafe accessories, but also with third-party products that support the new Qi 2.2 standard. The first devices from Belkin and UGREEN are already available, with more to follow. For the iPhone 16, this means more choice, more speed, and a significantly more convenient everyday charging experience.
