Apple management change: Company plans orderly transitions

Apple has already announced two top management resignations in the past twelve months. Now there is speculation that more high-ranking executives could soon leave the company. There are increasing signs that the coming years will be crucial for the future of Apple's leadership.

Apple is considered a stable technology company that has operated successfully for decades with a clear management structure. But even there, time doesn't stand still. Age-related changes in management are becoming more prominent. Two resignations within a year have highlighted this process, and insiders expect the departures to continue. The company itself is committed to a gradual transition to ensure continuity.

Resignation of Luca Maestri

In August 2024, the retirement of CFO Luca Maestri was officially confirmed. Kevan Parekh was set to succeed him later that same year. Following an official farewell from CEO Tim Cook in October 2024, Parekh stepped down in his new role as CFO in January 2025 and presented the quarterly results. Maestri did not, however, leave the company completely. He continues to serve as Apple's Vice President of Corporate Services, thus remaining closely involved with the company.

Jeff Williams hands over to Sabih Khan

Just a few months later, in July 2025, the next significant change followed. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams announced his phased retirement and handed over his position to Sabih Khan. Williams did not step down completely immediately, but continued to lead the design team. His final retirement is expected sometime in 2025. This demonstrates a pattern: executives are stepping down from their positions early but staying with the company to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.

Rumors of further departures

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who in his newsletter "Power On," which regularly provides insights into developments at Apple, reports that more resignations are imminent. Gurman cites internal sources who speak of departures from the top levels of management. He didn't name specific names, but he expects at least one major name to leave the company by 2026 at the latest, possibly even as early as 2025.

Aging leadership

A look at Apple's current leadership team makes it clear why speculation is mounting. Greg Joswiak, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, is 61. Sabih Khan, COO since 2025, is 59. Eddy Cue, responsible for Internet Software and Services, is 60. CEO Tim Cook himself had already indicated in 2021 that he would leave the company within ten years. The age structure suggests that several executives are approaching retirement age. This increases the likelihood of further departures in the coming years.

Staggered transitions

In both previous cases—Luca Maestri and Jeff Williams—Apple pursued a clear strategy: The resignation was announced, the succession process was arranged, and the departing executives remained with the company on an interim basis. According to Gurman, the intention is to stagger the transitions so that the company doesn't have to fill several key positions at once. This approach is intended to ensure stability and facilitate smooth transitions.

significance for the future

The upcoming changes are more than just personnel issues. Apple must ensure that experience and knowledge are not abruptly lost. At the same time, succession planning is becoming increasingly important, especially with a potential post-Tim Cook era in mind. The future leadership team will be tasked with ensuring both innovation and continuity, keeping the company at the forefront of the technology industry for decades to come.

Apple in generational change: Leadership before decisive phase

Apple is in the midst of a generational change at the leadership level. This process has already begun with the retirement of Luca Maestri and Jeff Williams, but further changes are on the horizon. The age structure of management clearly points to additional departures, and insiders expect this trend to continue in the coming years. Whether in 2025 or 2026, Apple is facing a pivotal phase that will significantly influence how strong and stable the company remains in the future. (Image: Shutterstock / iwonder TV)
