Will there be another large iMac? Rumors say

The iMac dominated the all-in-one computer market for years. Apple combined powerful hardware, minimalist design, and macOS into a device that was popular with both creative professionals and everyday users. However, with the discontinuation of the 27-inch iMac as part of the transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon, the landscape changed. Since then, only the 24-inch iMac has been available—and the question of whether a larger model will ever be released again remains unanswered.

A larger screen is a clear advantage for many applications. Graphic design, video editing, and data-intensive work all benefit from more space and higher resolution. Accordingly, interest in a potential successor to the previous 27-inch iMac is high. Apple itself has not yet confirmed this, but reports from well-connected insiders have raised hopes. The information available so far paints a picture that, on the one hand, promises potential, but, on the other, is marked by long delays and unclear timelines.

The end of the 27-inch iMac

In 2021, Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac. At that time, there was no announcement of a direct successor powered by Apple Silicon. Instead, the company recommended combining a Mac Studio or Mac mini with a Studio Display. This removed the large iMac from the lineup entirely—a decision that sparked controversy, not only in the creative community.

Rumors about a 32-inch model

At the end of 2023, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple was working on a 32-inch iMac. Kuo even suggested the model could be released in 2025. The planned features are said to include a mini-LED backlit display, which would enable higher brightness and an improved contrast ratio compared to current LCD technology. Such specifications would bring the iMac to a technical level that is particularly attractive to professional users.

Standstill in information

No new details have emerged since the reports in late 2023. In February 2024, Gurman merely mentioned that Apple would "probably offer a larger iMac again at some point." There are no concrete clues or reliable leaks regarding design, hardware, or production schedule.

Current status of the iMac line-up

The 24-inch iMac is currently the only all-in-one model available. It's expected to be updated with the new M5 chip in late 2025 or early 2026. This could also be a possible time to introduce a larger model—if Apple is actually working on it. Meanwhile, Apple continues to offer the 27-inch Studio Display from 2022 and the 32-inch Pro Display XDR from 2019 as standalone monitors.

32-inch iMac remains a question mark for now

The return of a larger iMac has not yet been confirmed. Rumors of a 32-inch model with a mini-LED display are fueling speculation, but information is thin on the ground. Apple is keeping a low profile, and there are long gaps between the sparse insider reports. Until an official announcement, it remains to be seen whether the iMac will actually be reinstated in a larger version.
