Apple continues to work on new solutions for operating its devices. The current focus is on so-called solid-state buttons with haptic feedback. The technology was already in development some time ago under the internal project name "Project Bongo." Now there are new indications that Apple has resumed the project not only for the iPhone, but also for the iPad and Apple Watch.
As early as 2022, reports emerged that Apple was planning to equip the iPhone 15 Pro with touch-sensitive buttons. These buttons would not function mechanically, but rather through pressure detection and a targeted vibration to provide user feedback. The goal was to minimize wear and tear and make operation more flexible. Ultimately, the plan was scrapped before the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro. Later, it was rumored that the iPhone 16 Pro might be equipped with the new technology. But that didn't happen either. Nevertheless, Apple doesn't seem to have given up on the idea.
Apple apparently continues Project Bongo
The Chinese leaker "Instant Digital" has stated on the Weibo platform that Apple is still working on haptic buttons. And not just for the iPhone, but for multiple product lines simultaneously. According to him, the developments will also affect the iPad and Apple Watch in the future. The technology behind them involves the buttons being built directly into the casing. They don't move mechanically, but rather react to pressure and simulate feedback via vibration. Users should be able to distinguish whether they are pressing lightly or firmly – depending on the pressure, the device should respond differently.
Why it has not been implemented yet
According to information from Instant Digital, the launch has so far failed not due to production costs, but due to technical challenges. The main problem: the buttons' response wasn't reliable enough. Errors occurred, especially in the precise feedback—that is, when exactly a press is detected and what the feedback looks like. This is a critical issue for Apple, as the operation must be absolutely stable.
Other priorities at Apple
Project Bongo was apparently halted for a time because Apple had shifted its focus to other areas. According to various sources, the main focus was on new developments in battery life and display technologies for upcoming iPhone models. The focus was therefore on optimizing core hardware elements, not on button controls.
What happens next
According to the latest report, the project is back in action. However, a concrete launch in the near future is unlikely. Insiders don't expect the iPhone 17 to come with haptic buttons. Nevertheless, it appears that Apple is sticking with the idea and continuing to develop it in the background.
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch – will everything soon have haptic feedback?
According to current rumors, Apple is continuing to work on solid-state buttons with haptic feedback. The technology will be used not only in the iPhone, but also in the iPad and Apple Watch. Although the launch has been postponed several times, the company still seems to see the potential of these buttons. Technical issues with reliable implementation had previously slowed the project. But now there are indications that Apple is moving forward with the project. If you use Apple products or are interested in technical developments, it's worth keeping an eye on the topic.
