First MacBook Pro with Touch Bar: Apple updates vintage list

Apple Vintage List

Cupertino, CA, US, April 22, 2020: Apple 16-inch MacBook Pro Magic Keyboard with Touch Bar and Touch ID close up global brand leader in high technology

Apple will add the first 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar to the list of vintage products on July 31, the company announced in an internal memo.

As the US blog MacRumors reported, Apple will update the vintage list in late July. The first MacBook Pro models with the Touch Bar were released in October 2016 as part of a complete redesign of the MacBook Pro. Other new features included a thinner and lighter chassis, the much-criticized butterfly keyboard, Touch ID, a larger trackpad, and the elimination of all ports except the Thunderbolt ports and headphone jack. Apple has removed the Touch Bar from the latest 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, although the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 chip still has it.

Apple updates the vintage list on July 31st

The memo also states that the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and some other devices will also be classified as vintage at the end of the month. Specifically, the following devices are to be retired:

  • MacBook Pro (13″, 2016, two Thunderbolt ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13″, 2016, four Thunderbolt ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15″, 2016)
  • MacBook Air (13″, Early 2015)
  • MacBook (12″, early 2016)
  • iMac (21.5″, late 2015)
  • iMac (27″, Retina 5K, late 2015)
  • iPad Pro (9.7″, WiFi)
  • iPad Pro (9.7″, WiFi + Cellular)

Apple classifies a device as "vintage" when five years have passed since Apple last offered the device for sale. The first MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar were discontinued in June 2017, so the five-year mark was only recently passed. Until mid-2018, vintage products were not eligible for Apple-approved repairs. But now Apple Stores and authorized service partners can repair devices up to two years after they are classified as vintage, provided replacement parts are available.
