Base One Max: Nomad's high-end MagSafe charger in hands-on

Nomad Base One Max

Nomad introduced the first official MagSafe charger, the Base One, in March. However, the charging station can only power one iPhone. For this reason, the Base One Max was released just a few weeks later. A charging station with MagSafe charging technology that can charge iPhone and Apple Watch. Let's take a look.

After having already seen the Nomad Base One have viewed, let's now take a look at the Base One Max. The Base One Max has a similar design to the Base One, consisting of a platform with a flat MagSafe charger on the right side and a matching upright Apple Watch charging puck on the left. Like the Base One, it comes in silver and white or carbide, a black color. Design-wise, it looks like Nomad has attached a Base One charger to an Apple Watch charging station.

Nomad Base One Max with MFi certification

The MagSafe charging station is glossy like the Base One thanks to the glass coating. However, there is a seam that separates the MagSafe charging station from the Apple Watch charging station, which is not made of the same glossy material but rather a matte, soft coating.

The new 2-in-1 charging station is really heavy, weighing 900 grams. As for the magnetic attachment, it is quite strong, so the best way to remove your iPhone from the base is with a small twisting motion. The MagSafe charger is the same as Apple's MagSafe charger and works identically. This means that this is an MFi (Made for iPad, iPhone, iPod) certified product. This means that it charges a MagSafe compatible iPhone at 15W (12W for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini).

Does the Apple Watch Series 7 charge faster?

You can of course use the Base One Max with iPhones without the MagSafe feature. But then you won't have the benefit of the magnetic attachment and the charging power will be limited to 7.5W. By the way, although the Apple Watch Series 7 supports fast charging, the Nomad Base One Max is a standard Apple Watch charging puck that doesn't support the faster charging speeds. Nomad includes a USB-C cable with the Base One Max, which charges via USB-C, unlike some other chargers with a proprietary connector. As expected, the power adapter is not included. The company recommends using a 30W power adapter, which of course comes with an additional cost - please keep that in mind.

Conclusion

Having tested and continued to use both the Base One and Base One Max models, I'd say both charging stations are interesting for users looking for high-quality MagSafe chargers in the premium segment. With a price tag of $149.95, you can look forward to a truly high-quality charger that's timeless and fits in any office or bedroom, for example. So, if you're interested in this product, you can order it from Nomad's online shop. (Image: Nomad)
