MagSafe on a new level: Nomad Base One in hands-on

Nomad recently introduced a new charging station - the Nomad Base One, a new MagSafe charger that is attached to a piece of metal and glass and stays in place thanks to its heavy weight. In the meantime, I've taken a look at the new accessories. You can find out below whether it's any good and who it's intended for.

Nomad introduced its first official wireless MagSafe charger, the Base One, a few days ago. For a long time, Belkin was the only official supplier of MagSafe chargers. But that is changing now that accessory manufacturers are now able to obtain Made for iPhone-certified hardware from Apple (MFi certification). The Base One uses original MagSafe components sourced directly from Apple and can therefore charge a MagSafe-compatible iPhone at up to 15W (with the exception of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, which have a maximum of 12W). Magnetic charging options that are not compatible with MagSafe are limited to 7.5W, as with any other Qi charger.

The highlights at a glance:

  • Officially MFi certified MagSafe with 15W wireless fast charging
  • Power supply via USB-C (nylon braided cable included)
  • 30W power adapter required (sold separately)
  • Made entirely of metal and glass in carbide grey or silver
  • Solid construction with a weight of 515 grams
  • Price: $129.95

The Base One features a glossy glass surface and a heavy aluminum casing, available in either silver or gray. Weighing in at 515 grams, or more than a pound, it certainly feels like a high-quality product. The glass surface houses the soft-coated MagSafe charger, while the feet on the bottom slightly raise the product and protect the bottom.

Nomad Base One: The Conclusion

As some of you have already noticed, the Nomad Base One, with its high-quality workmanship and the associated price, is not suitable for every user. Especially since many of course prefer a charging solution for multiple devices. Nevertheless, in times when the market is flooded with cheap plastic chargers, it is quite refreshing to see a high-quality MagSafe charger that is designed to last. So if you have the necessary cash, you should definitely be satisfied with Nomad's latest product - for Nomad Online Shop. Please remember, however, that a 30W power adapter, which is recommended, is not included and must therefore be purchased separately. (Image: Nomad)
