In addition to the new MacBook Pro series, Apple has introduced two new powerful chips, the M1 Pro and M1 Max. Now benchmark results have emerged that show that the GPU of the M1 Max chip is at least three times faster than the first generation of the M1.
An unconfirmed Geekbench post showsthat an M1 Max with 64 GB of RAM achieves a Metal Score of 68870. This compares to an average score of around 21800 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 chip. According to Geekbench, the M1 Max also outperforms the Metal Scores of the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M, the most powerful GPU offered with last year's 16-inch MacBook Pro, by 62. It remains unclear which M1 Max configuration is represented in the Geekbench Compute report. Apple touted maximum performance on par with the discrete GPU in a high-end PC laptop during its "Unleashed" event.
Apple's M1 Max GPU: Two options to choose from
Apple offers the M1 Max in configurations with 24- and 32-core GPUs, both of which can be accompanied by up to 64GB of RAM. As developer Steve Troughton-Smith noted, today's score is below the more than 90,000 points achieved by the laptop version of Nvidia's class-leading RTX 3080, suggesting it belongs to an M1 Max with a 24-core GPU. The M1 Max, along with the M1 Pro, is Apple's new "pro" silicon design. As a reminder, the M1 Pro features an 8- or 10-core CPU and a 14- or 16-core GPU, while the M1 Max features a 10-core CPU and a 24- or 32-core GPU.
