B2002: Mysterious Apple device still listed in database

Apple filed its latest M1 Macs in the Bluetooth SIG database this week. These include the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro. The mysterious "B2002" device also remains listed in the database.

Apple first announced this mysterious “B2002” device, which is currently listed in the “Personal Computer” category, in October 2020 registeredAt the time, there was speculation that it could be an Apple Silicon Mac. As MacRumors now discovered Apple has registered its three latest M1 Macs with Bluetooth SIG. "B2002" is still listed separately with a "TBD" model number. So the mysterious product doesn't seem to be one of the first M1 Macs. Since there are separate Bluetooth database listings for things like the iPhone 12, HomePod mini, AirPods Max, and the various iPad models, it has to be something else entirely. In the process, MacRumors points out that Cupertino occasionally lists components separately in the Bluetooth SIG database, such as the H1 chip used in the AirPods.

B2002: Apple's next update should provide more clarity

In addition to entire products, Apple also occasionally places components in the Bluetooth SIG database, such as the H1 chip in the second-generation AirPods and the W2 chip in the Apple Watch Series 3. The "TBD" entry has a "Controller Subsystem + Host + Profile" description, so it's possible that it refers to the M1 chip or another component in the M1 Macs and simply hasn't been updated to reflect that yet, but it remains to be seen.

The theory sounds plausible. However, it cannot yet be definitively confirmed. So it remains to be seen what Apple's next update to the database will contain - the entry is from October 2020, after all. It may well be a device after all, after all, there are a few products pending, including a new Apple TV, AirTags and new AirPods. (Photo by Ekaterina79 / Bigstockphoto)
