Rumors that Apple plans to introduce a wireless iPhone model have been circulating for years. But how could iOS recovery work without a cable?
If rumors are to be believed, Apple could possibly introduce a model without any connection this year. This version of the iPhone would rely on MagSafe or wireless charging technology. But how would the recovery process work without a cable? For this, an "Internet Recovery" mode would have to be integrated, which would allow iOS to be reinstalled without a Mac or PC.
iPhone 2021: Apple is working on three possible methods
To restore an unresponsive iPhone, it usually needs to be connected to another device, typically via the Lightning port. If the rumors of a portless iPhone are true, the lack of a Lightning port or other standard physical port may make the device more complicated to service. To enable a complete reinstall of iOS on an unresponsive iPhone without a clear physical connection, Apple is naturally looking into ways. Based on rumors from Appleosophy The so-called "Internet Recovery" is reported. Apple's software teams are reportedly investigating three ways to put the iPhone into a mode that allows recovery.
- The first method is for a user to put the iPhone into manual recovery mode, triggering the "Internet Recovery" which is received by nearby Macs or a PC and guides the user through the rest of the recovery.
- The second possibility is that the device itself automatically switches to the mode, which again results in the same prompts.
- A third approach appears to involve using Bluetooth as a “last resort” for signal transmission and data transfer.
It is believed that Apple is interested in using the first two methods as recovery options. Both methods have reportedly been in testing for a while, but it is claimed that the methods are currently too slow for public use, suggesting that more work is needed on the subject.
Hidden connections are not an option
While wireless recovery options are the main focus of the effort, physical access is not yet completely ignored. A hardware team is apparently considering using pogo pads to initiate a physical connection without the need for a standard port. This would be hidden on the back of the SIM card slot and use a special SIM card tray cable. The idea of using hidden ports is not new. Both the Apple TV and Apple Watch have one. The problem is, however, that such a case modification is not allowed on the iPhone. Apple actually intends to make the whole thing wireless. For this reason, the software team is faced with the challenge of implementing the whole thing passably. However, since this is not that easy, the whole thing could take a while.
