Apple is planning a major shift in its iPhone release schedule. Starting in 2026, new models will be released not only in the fall, but also in the spring. The iPhone 17e will play a central role in this. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has confirmed that Apple plans to unveil this model in the first half of 2026. This marks the first time since 2011 that Apple has adopted a two-tiered release strategy. The move is a response to growing competitive pressure and is intended to make Apple more flexible and present in the smartphone market.
According to Apple's current plans, the iPhone 17e will be a new entry-level model in the iPhone product range. It follows the iPhone 16e, which was released in early 2025 and is available in Germany for €699. With the 16e, Apple replaced the previous iPhone SE. The 17e is intended to continue this path and offer a compact, more affordable device at a similar price – not as a compromise model, but as a firmly integrated part of the new iPhone generation.
Apple changes its release schedule
Until now, Apple has typically launched its new iPhones once a year, in September. This will change starting in 2026. According to Kuo, Apple plans to release new devices in the spring as well. The schedule is as follows:
- Second half of 2025: iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17
- First half of 2026: iPhone 17e
- Second half of 2026: foldable iPhone, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Air
- First half of 2027: iPhone 18, iPhone 18e
- Second half of 2027: second foldable iPhone (already in development), iPhone 19 Pro Max, iPhone 19 Pro, iPhone 19 Air with larger display
Apple wants to respond more specifically to market developments. Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo often release their flagships in the first half of the year, putting Apple under pressure – especially in the Chinese market. Huawei has recently repositioned itself more strongly in the premium segment. Apple aims to counteract this with the spring release.
Why the iPhone 17e is important for Apple
The iPhone 17e is part of a strategic rethink. With two release waves per year, Apple can position its products more clearly. The flagships continue to receive attention in the fall, while cheaper or special models like the 17e appear in the spring. This has two advantages:
- Apple closes the marketing gap that arises between previous annual releases
- Attention is not distributed among too many models at the same time
The iPhone 17e is not only intended to be an affordable entry-level device, but also to secure Apple a place in the public eye in the spring.
What to expect from the iPhone 17e
Technical details for the iPhone 17e are not yet available. However, it seems likely that Apple will opt for a stripped-down but solid overall package, as with the iPhone 16e. The device will likely come with the latest iOS version, a slightly slimmed-down camera setup, and a somewhat cheaper casing design. Performance and software support should still be up to typical Apple standards. Like its predecessor, the iPhone 17e is expected to be priced around €699. It is therefore clearly aimed at buyers who want an iPhone but aren't willing to spend €1,000 or more on a top-of-the-line model (via Kuo's Blog).
iPhone 17e: Apple's answer to spring pressure?
The iPhone 17e is expected to be released in spring 2026 and will herald Apple's new release strategy. It's intended to fill the gap in the market that Apple has so far left with its Asian competitors, while also rounding out the existing offering at the lower end. If you're looking for a more affordable iPhone model that's still state-of-the-art, you should keep an eye on the 17e. (Image: Shutterstock / Framesira)
