iPhone 17 with 120 Hz? Apple's standard model in focus

Apple's iPhone 17 will be released next year and could be one of the biggest evolutions for the standard model in the iPhone range. With the introduction of "ProMotion" technology, i.e. a higher refresh rate, Apple seems to be pushing its boundaries.

In the past, Apple has often chosen to reserve some of the best features of its devices for the Pro models. This was particularly evident with ProMotion technology, which was previously only available in the more expensive versions. Now there are increasing indications that Apple could soften this boundary with the iPhone 17 and integrate the popular features into the standard model. For you as a user, this means more performance, better technology and a more comprehensive experience without necessarily having to choose the Pro model.

The standard iPhone 17 and its new refresh rate

One of the most exciting rumors surrounding the iPhone 17 is the integration of a display with a higher refresh rate (via Weibo). Until now, the standard models were limited to 60 Hz, while the Pro models were equipped with up to 120 Hz and "ProMotion" technology. This technology could now also find its way into the standard model. This means smoother scrolling, smoother animations and an overall better visual experience - whether you are scrolling through social media or watching videos.

ProMotion and LTPO technology

The basis for this innovation is the switch from LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) to LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) panels. LTPO makes it possible to dynamically adjust the refresh rate - from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. While the lower frequencies are used for energy-saving functions such as always-on displays, the higher frequencies ensure a smooth user experience for more intensive applications. This brings several advantages for you as a user:

  • Longer battery life thanks to energy-efficient refresh rate adjustment.
  • The ability to permanently display widgets, time and notifications on the display.
  • A seamless experience when using apps, videos and games.

Impact on the iPhone series

If Apple actually integrates ProMotion technology into all models of the iPhone 17 series, this would represent a big step towards standardization. Until now, the higher refresh rate was one of the main differentiators between the standard and Pro models. With this change, the Pro models could lose some of their exclusivity. At the same time, Apple is catching up with other premium smartphone manufacturers that already offer 120 Hz displays as standard. According to industry expert Ross Young Both the iPhone 17 and a new, thinner model called the "iPhone 17 Air" could be equipped with ProMotion technology. This would mean that Apple could completely do without 60 Hz displays - a step that many other brands have already taken.

iPhone 17: More rumors and release date

In addition to the innovations in the display area, there is also speculation about the design and camera of the iPhone 17. Apple is expected to continue to focus on a sleek and modern design. It should also be possible to introduce an improved camera setup that focuses on detail and image quality. The iPhone 17 will most likely be launched in September 2025, the usual release period for new iPhone models. Until then, it remains to be seen what other details emerge. (Photo by Unsplash / Amanz)
