Apple will unveil iOS 19 at WWDC next month. The update brings a new design, but above all, a feature that will be clearly noticeable to many users: improved battery life. This is made possible by a new, AI-powered system – thanks to Apple Intelligence.
According to a report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, iOS 19 will be released in September. One of the most important new features is intelligent battery management, which analyzes how you use your iPhone and saves energy based on that. Apple uses battery data collected from user devices to identify patterns and specifically optimize power consumption. The upcoming iPhone 17 Air is expected to benefit most, but the feature will be available on all supported devices.
AI-powered battery management in iOS 19
The new battery feature is part of the Apple Intelligence Platform. iOS 19 will automatically detect when and how energy can be saved based on your usage behavior. The AI then decides whether to throttle certain apps or background processes without your intervention. Apple collected and analyzed battery data from iPhones for this purpose. The collected information helps the system recognize when certain functions consume particularly high levels of power and whether there is potential for savings. The goal is to extend battery life without you having to sacrifice anything.
Charging indicator on the lock screen
In addition to AI adjustments, there will be a new indicator on the lock screen that shows how long your iPhone is expected to take to fully charge. This feature is designed to help you better plan your daily life without having to constantly monitor the charging indicator.
Special relevance for the iPhone 17 Air
The iPhone 17 Air, which will be launched this fall, is the primary reason for developing this feature. It's a thinner, lighter model intended as an alternative to the existing standard and Pro models. However, due to its slim design, it has a smaller battery and therefore a shorter battery life. iOS 19 aims to compensate for this with intelligent power management. According to Gurman, the feature won't be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Air, but this model will benefit the most. At the same time, the feature will also be available on other iPhones with Apple Intelligence.
iOS 19 thinks for itself – and saves power
iOS 19 introduces, for the first time, battery management that dynamically adapts to your usage behavior. This is made possible by Apple Intelligence, which is based on real user data. The feature is designed to optimize power consumption and also shows you how long your iPhone needs to charge on the lock screen. The iPhone 17 Air in particular benefits from this, but all other compatible iPhones will also receive the update. If you're hoping for longer battery life without changing your usage behavior, iOS 19 is perfect for you. (Image: Shutterstock / Primakov)
