Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has given investors a comprehensive forecast that mainly covers future iPhone models. However, he also mentioned Apple's AR/VR headset.

As part of a comprehensive forecast released today, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo explains that the upcoming Apple AR/VR headset will contain up to 15 cameras. Previously, Kuo stated that the headset will likely be released in 2022 and will cost around $1000. In the long term, it is believed that Apple discrete augmented reality glasses are being developed. However, these will not be ready for the market for several years. In the meantime, Apple is preparing to launch a headset similar to the Valve Index and HTC Vive Pro. The product may have some utility for consumers, but it is expected to be used primarily to attract developers to Apple's AR ecosystem. Kuo refers to this product as an HMD, or Head Mounted Display.

AR/VR headset uses "foveated rendering" technology

The product is said to have 15 cameras. But why are so many cameras needed? Kuo has an answer to that. Apple is expected to not only collect data from the outside world but also closely track the user's eye movements. The extensive tracking will allow the headset to increase apparent fidelity by only targeting what the wearer is currently looking at, rather than the entire human field of vision. This technology is called "foveated rendering". According to an earlier report by The Information, the headset will have two 8K displays, one for each eye, and will use eye tracking. One thing should already be clear - Apple's headset will impress, at least on the spec sheet. (Photo by Jag_cz / Bigstockphoto)
