Apple tests new Xcode version with Claude from Anthropic

Apple is working on a new version of Xcode powered by artificial intelligence. The company has partnered with AI specialist Anthropic. The goal is to make programming, testing, and optimizing code more efficient by using the AI model Claude, reports Bloomberg. The partnership is part of Apple's larger strategy to support its own software development with advanced AI and keep up with the competition.

In recent years, Apple has been rather hesitant about using AI in software development. While other tech companies integrated AI-powered tools early on, Apple waited. The reason: the technology wasn't yet mature enough to meet its own quality standards. But that has changed. Large language models like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini have become significantly more powerful. Apple is now responding by focusing on targeted partnerships with leading AI companies.

New Xcode version with Claude from Anthropic

The new version of Xcode, which is being tested internally at Apple, is based on Anthropic's Claude-Sonnet model. Claude is a large language model that is particularly well-suited for programming tasks. It is considered a serious competitor to ChatGPT. Apple has initially rolled out the tool internally. Employees can already use it to write, revise, and test code. The new version of Xcode offers a chat interface through which developers can ask questions or request code directly. The tool can also help with testing user interfaces and finding bugs. It is still unclear whether Apple will also release the new platform to third-party developers. If the internal tests are successful, this is conceivable. The tool could then become part of a larger package for external developers.

Connection to Swift Assist

The current development is also related to an earlier Apple project: Swift Assist. This was an AI-powered programming aid that was supposed to be released in 2024. Ultimately, however, the tool was never released due to problems with internal testing. Swift Assist tended to generate incorrect information, which slowed the development process rather than accelerated it. The collaboration with Anthropic could address this. Claude delivers more stable and precise results and should help address Swift Assist's weaknesses. It's therefore quite possible that Apple will build a new, functional assistance system based on Claude.

Apple's broader AI strategy

The collaboration with Anthropic is not an isolated case. Apple has already entered into several AI partnerships. OpenAI's ChatGPT is integrated into iOS 18. At the same time, Apple is working with Google to support the Gemini model. In China, the company relies on local partners such as Baidu and Alibaba. This diversity demonstrates that Apple is not developing its own universal AI platform, but rather cooperates with other companies specifically depending on the region and application. This way, Apple aims to respond flexibly to market demands while simultaneously offering high-quality, manageable AI functions (via Bloomberg).

Xcode with AI: The future of Apple programming

Apple is bringing AI into its own developer environment – and not half-heartedly. The collaboration with Anthropic and the integration of Claude into Xcode demonstrate that the company is serious. Developers at Apple are already testing the system. It's not impossible that you'll soon be able to use it yourself if you develop for Apple platforms. After initial hesitation, Apple is significantly upgrading its AI capabilities. The combination of internal use, external collaboration, and strategic integration shows where it's headed. AI is becoming an integral part of Apple's development tools – and this could fundamentally change your work as a developer. (Image: Shutterstock / khunkornStudio)
