Apple will introduce a new Apple TV 4K later this year. The last version launched in 2022, and since then, Apple's chip technology and software have undergone significant improvements. The next generation is expected to be significantly more powerful and will likely include four major innovations. If you're considering whether an upgrade is worth it or whether you should wait to buy, you'll find all the important information here.
Apple TV 4K is more than just a streaming box. It's a central device for Apple users in the living room—not just for movies and series, but also for games, fitness apps, HomeKit control, and much more. The current version from 2022 runs on the A15 Bionic chip and offers a solid experience. Nevertheless, it's time for a technical update, especially as Apple is bringing its new developments in artificial intelligence to more and more devices. The new Apple TV 4K will continue in this direction.
A17 Pro or A18: New chip upgrade planned
The current model uses the A15 Bionic, which is now two chip generations behind. An upgrade to the A17 Pro or A18 is very likely for the new Apple TV 4K. Both chips support AI applications and are significantly better suited for modern software features and more demanding games. With one of these chips, the Apple TV 4K will not only be faster but also equipped for future developments—for example, if Apple integrates more compute-intensive features like 3D gaming or advanced user profiles in the future. It can also be assumed that the system will run more smoothly overall and apps will load faster.
Apple Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence is making its way
Apple is gradually equipping all of its devices with its AI platform, Apple Intelligence. Starting with the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, the Vision Pro was recently equipped with it. With the new update, Apple Intelligence is expected to also arrive on the Apple TV 4K. What does this mean in concrete terms? It involves personalized recommendations based on your viewing habits and mood, expanded Siri controls that understand even vague commands ("Show me a funny scene"), and the ability to directly query information from a movie—for example, what music is currently playing or who the actor is in a particular scene. Amazon has already shown what is possible in this direction with Alexa+ on Fire TV. Apple will bring similar functions to the Apple TV with iOS 19 and the revised Siri update.
Dedicated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip for better connections
Apple has been working for years to develop its own wireless technology – so far primarily in the mobile communications sector. The new Apple TV 4K will be the first to use its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip. The goal is better integration with other Apple devices and greater energy efficiency. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, this chip will lead to tighter integration within the Apple ecosystem. Data should sync faster, and the connection between devices will be more stable. This could also bring a noticeable improvement for interaction with HomePods, AirPods, or HomeKit accessories.
Possible integrated camera for FaceTime and gesture control
One thing is currently uncertain, but is being discussed: Apple is apparently considering integrating a camera directly into the Apple TV 4K. So far, FaceTime on the device only works via the Continuity Camera with an iPhone or iPad. With an integrated camera, the system would be more independent and easier to use. In addition to video telephony via FaceTime, Apple could also introduce gesture-based controls. Simple hand movements to pause content or operate menus would be conceivable – similar to previous smart TV experiments, but this time embedded in Apple's system. Apple is apparently working on several products that will get cameras in the future – AirPods and the Apple Watch are also being discussed. A camera in the Apple TV 4K therefore fits into the strategic development, especially in the context of AI and smart operation.
The new Apple TV 4K is much more versatile
With the new Apple TV 4K, Apple will bring the set-top box up to date. The more powerful chip, the integration of Apple Intelligence, a proprietary wireless chip, and possibly a built-in camera demonstrate that Apple is significantly evolving the device. Since Apple typically doesn't update its devices for extended periods, this new generation is expected to feature several major changes at once. Anyone who owns an Apple TV 4K older than the 2022 model should consider upgrading. And anyone thinking about buying a new model should wait until the official launch. It shouldn't be long now.
