Apple & Meta as competitors: Google is working on an AR headset

Google AR headset

According to reports, Google has started developing an augmented reality headset that could possibly be released in 2024 and is intended to compete with Apple's headset, among others.

After Google Glass failed to gain traction, Google seemed to leave the AR space for a few years. Google Glass was later revived as a corporate headset. But now it is believed that the company is once again considering a consumer product. According to The Verge, Google has 300 employees working on a secret development called Project Iris. In a separate facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, Project Iris is said to be in the prototype stage. These early prototypes are said to resemble ski goggles. They are powered by a special Google processor and run Android, although it is not ruled out that a new, special operating system will also be developed.

Data centers should support the Google AR headset

Currently, the plan is for the Google AR headset not to need to be paired with a phone, but Google intends to use its own data centers to remotely process and render graphics that will then be fed into the headset, two unnamed sources told The Verge oppositethat the headset is scheduled to launch in 2024. However, development is still in its early stages, so this is more of a hopeful goal than a concrete plan. Separately, it was reported that Clay Bavor, Google's head of AR and VR, founded the facility in November 2021. So the whole thing should remain pretty exciting. (Image: Google)
