Apple is reportedly working on Mac models with touchscreens

Despite years of resistance, Apple is working on introducing touchscreens in Macs, according to a report from Bloomberg. The news site claims that a new MacBook Pro with an OLED display in 2025 could be the first Mac with a touchscreen.

Loud Bloomberg Apple engineers are "actively involved in the project," suggesting that the company is "seriously considering" producing touchscreen Macs. The first touchscreen MacBook Pro would retain the traditional design of a laptop with a trackpad and keyboard. But the display would support touch input like an iPhone or iPad. The first touchscreen Macs will likely use macOS, as Apple is not actively working on combining iPadOS and macOS, according to the report.

Is Apple changing its mind about touchscreen Macs?

Apple has repeatedly dismissed the idea of a touchscreen Mac over the past few years, so it would be a major U-turn for the company if it went ahead with those plans. In 2010, for example, Steve Jobs said that "touch surfaces don't want to be vertical" because the arm fatigue of keeping your finger on the screen was too great. And in 2021, John Ternus, the head of Apple hardware engineering, said that the Mac was "fully optimized for indirect input" and that the company saw no reason to change that at the time.
