Apple has now officially kicked off this year's WWDC 2020 and presented the next big Apple Watch operating system as part of the digital keynote - watchOS 7.

In addition to iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, the new operating system for the Apple Watch was also unveiled. The features are not only remarkable but also really useful. Apple:

Apple today previewed watchOS 7, bringing enhanced customization tools and powerful new health and fitness features to the world's most advanced smartwatch. Personalization is taken to a whole new level with shareable and discoverable watch face configurations, while sleep tracking, automatic handwashing detection, additional workout types including dancing, and a new hearing health feature provide greater insight into overall wellbeing and are mindful of privacy. Conveniently on your wrist, the map is updated with cycling directions, and Siri now offers voice translation.

watchOS 7: A number of useful functions

As expected, Apple has introduced new watch faces in watchOS 7. These can be customized and personalized much more easily. The Chronograph Pro, for example, has an integrated tachymeter. What is particularly exciting is the ability to share personalized watch faces with other users. These can be sent via iMessage or email or made available in the App Store or on social media.

watchOS 7: Sleep monitoring

There has been speculation about the feature for a long time. Will it require a new Apple Watch or will it be backwards compatible? Now it's official - sleep monitoring is backwards compatible. Users can plan and monitor their sleep via Apple Watch. Bedtimes can be set and more. Apple explains the feature as follows:

By detecting micro-movements from the watch's accelerometer that signal breathing during sleep, Apple Watch intelligently tracks when the wearer is sleeping and how much sleep they're getting each night. In the morning, the wearer sees a visualization of the previous night's sleep, including periods of being awake and asleep. They also see a graph showing their weekly sleep trend.

workouts and more

In addition, watchOS 7 introduces new workouts, including dance, functional strength training, and cooldowns. Cyclists can look forward to new routes designed specifically for cyclists as part of the update.

compatibility

The new watchOS 7 will support Apple's following models:

  • Apple Watch Series 3
  • Apple Watch Series 4
  • Apple Watch Series 5

This means that both the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 are officially no longer available. The first preview for developers can be downloaded now. Also new - watchOS 7 will also be available for public testers from July. (Photo by Denys Prykhodov / Bigstockphoto)
