WhatsApp: Support for iPad and a second iPhone?

Antalya, TURKEY - December 28, 2020. iPhone 12 smart phone screen showing Whatsapp logo.

It's been a while since WhatsApp's multi-device support was last discussed. But now there is news that will certainly be of interest to some people. WhatsApp could go down a similar path to Telegram.

According to the well-informed blog WABetaInfo, WhatsApp already offers some beta testers the option to link their account to WhatsApp Web, Desktop and an app at the same time. At the same time, an iPad app is also being developed. In addition, the function of linking the WhatsApp account to another iPhone is being worked on, according to the blog. All of this is happening as part of Multi-Device Support 2.0. As can be seen in the picture, messages can be easily downloaded to another iPhone.

WhatsApp: When will multi-device support 2.0 be introduced?

When you open WhatsApp on the second mobile device after a while, the app downloads all messages from the server. Your main phone doesn't even have to be connected to the Internet for this to happen. When you connect your second mobile device for the first time, WhatsApp synchronizes the chat history: This process is of course end-to-end encrypted.

According to WABetainfo, however, it is not 100 percent clear whether this feature will only be available for tablets. But for now, there is no indication that the company will exclude mobile phones, which is why we can assume that it will. The lack of multi-device support - similar to Telegram - is one of the biggest points of criticism, which is why the company is now trying to offer this feature soon. Originally, multi-device support was intended to link an account on four devices + a smartphone. However, after today's discovery, there may have been changes in the plans. Be that as it may. When the feature will actually be introduced is currently unknown. So we will probably have to be patient. (Photo by yalcin.sonat / Bigstockphoto)
