OpenAI is about to embark on a new chapter in the development of language models. After several interim versions such as GPT-4.5 and GPT-4o, GPT-5 is now set to be released – a model that will not only be more powerful but also fundamentally different in its structure. The official launch will take place in a livestream scheduled for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time (7:00 p.m. Central European Time). Excitement in the tech world is accordingly high.
Since ChatGPT was released with GPT-3.5 in November 2022, OpenAI has quickly taken the lead in AI development. GPT-4 followed in March 2023, followed by variants such as GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1, and the smaller o4-mini. Despite these releases, none of the models were considered worthy of the official GPT-5 designation. That's changing now. A post on X with the caption "LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10 AM PT" made it clear in advance that the release would be about GPT-5. The S was replaced with a 5 – subtle but unambiguous.
A new model with new goals
According to initial statements by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, GPT-5 will be able to do more than any previous model. Among other things, a function for visualizing ChatGPT's thought process is planned. This should make it easier to understand how decisions are made – an important step towards transparency. Furthermore, many features that were previously spread across different model variants will be combined into a single model. The model families of the so-called o-series will become part of the main line, i.e., integrated into GPT-5.
- The idea behind it: less complexity, more consistency. Instead of switching between GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, or o4-mini, a unified model with combined performance will be used. GPT-5 should therefore not only be faster and more accurate, but also easier to use.
OpenAI remains on growth path
A lot is happening on the platform side as well. ChatGPT now runs not only on the web, but also on Mac, iPhone, and iPad—natively on Apple silicon. Particularly noteworthy is the integration into Apple systems through Apple Intelligence. This allows ChatGPT to be used directly via Siri. The partnership between Apple and OpenAI could mean an even deeper integration of AI into everyday life in the future. At the same time, OpenAI has recently adjusted user behavior in ChatGPT. The goal is healthier usage, with fewer potentially problematic spending and more focus on the model's responsible behavior. While specific changes were not detailed, the move indicates a strategic direction to minimize regulatory risks.
Internal use has long been underway
Although GPT-5 hasn't been officially introduced yet, the model has apparently been in use internally for some time. Sam Altman casually mentioned in a social media comment that he used ChatGPT with GPT-5 to select TV shows. This statement wasn't intended as a formal announcement, but it does provide insight into the model's development status. Thus, GPT-5 appears to be advanced enough to be used productively in everyday life.
OpenAI: GPT-5 brings new structure to the model world
GPT-5 is the biggest update to ChatGPT to date. The focus is on a more transparent representation of the model logic, the merging of different model series, and deeper integration with existing platforms such as macOS and iOS. With this, OpenAI is not only bringing a new language model to market, but is also taking a strategic step toward standardization and everyday usability. Expectations for the livestream are high – GPT-5 could be a milestone that fundamentally changes ChatGPT and the use of AI in everyday life.
