MacBook Air teardown

The first teardowns have already been presented. Now the specialists at iFixit are taking a look at the circuit board of the new MacBook Air.

Just yesterday, to the delight of many repair service providers, it was announced that replacing the battery and trackpad in the new MacBook Air has been made easier. With other models, the top case (upper shell) must first be removed in order to access the components in question. Now the new notebook has been subjected to a teardown - the result is somewhat disappointing.

Thoughtful ordering

The entry-level notebook is generally easy to open - apart from a pentalobe screwdriver, no special tools are required. After opening it, the guys from iFixit found a soldered SSD. The RAM cannot be replaced afterwards either.

This finding is disappointing not only for professional mechanics but also for many fans - but it was to be expected. This means that the configuration of the new MacBook Air must be carefully considered when ordering. Subsequent changes are no longer possible.

MacBook Air scores better than the MacBook Pro

Even the power storage unit can be replaced without damaging the keyboard and the upper casing. Even though changing the battery has been made easier to repair this time, the hobbyist still has to remove the motherboard and speakers first. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air's repairability rating was not good. iFixit awarded it 3 out of 10 points. In the end, the entry-level notebook performed better than the MacBook Pro - which only had to make do with one point.
