With the launch of iOS 18, Apple is once again raising the bar and significantly expanding the possibilities for using Apple Pay. This latest version of iOS brings an interesting new feature: the ability to use Apple Pay in any desktop web browser, such as Chrome, Edge and Firefox, even on Windows PCs. This feature, which was previously exclusive to Safari on Macs, opens up completely new horizons for users and merchants alike.

Since the launch of Apple Pay in 2014, Apple has worked continuously to optimize the payment system and make it as user-friendly as possible. With iOS 18, Apple is taking a significant step further and making Apple Pay available on a variety of desktop browsers. This means more flexibility and convenience for users and opens up new opportunities for merchants to expand their customer base.

Apple Pay on the Desktop: A Revolution

With iOS 18, you can now use Apple Pay in almost any desktop web browser, regardless of whether you're using a Mac or a Windows PC. This is a significant expansion, as Apple Pay could previously only be used in Safari on Macs. This innovation is made possible by the implementation of a special code system.

How it works

When you shop in a desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox and select Apple Pay as your payment method, a code will appear on the screen. This code can be scanned using the camera app on an iPhone updated to iOS 18 or later. The scanning process connects your iPhone to the desktop browser so you can complete the purchase safely and quickly from your iPhone. This provides a seamless integration and increases security by eliminating the need to enter payment details directly in the desktop browser.

Benefits for users and retailers

For users:

  • Increased flexibility: You can now use Apple Pay in your preferred browser, whether on a Mac or Windows PC.
  • Simplicity and convenience: The payment process is quick and straightforward.
  • Security: Your payment details are protected because they do not need to be entered in the browser.

For retailers:

  • Expanded reach: Accept Apple Pay payments from customers using different browsers and operating systems.
  • Better conversion rates: Simple and fast payment methods often lead to fewer abandoned orders.

integration and availability

Apple revealed further details about this system in a coding session at WWDC 2024. However, it will take some time for website developers to adopt the latest Apple Pay SDK, so this feature won't be available across the internet immediately after the release of iOS 18. Developers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new capabilities as soon as possible to offer their customers this innovative payment method.

beta phase and release

iOS 18 is currently in beta and is expected to be generally available in September. Users who participate in the beta can try out the new Apple Pay feature now and provide feedback to encourage possible improvements before the final release.

Apple Pay and iOS 18: A milestone for users and retailers

The introduction of Apple Pay in desktop browsers with iOS 18 marks a significant advancement in the world of online payments. This new feature offers significant benefits to both users and merchants by increasing flexibility, convenience, and security. With iOS 18 becoming generally available in September, an exciting time is ahead. Get your iPhone ready and look forward to an even more convenient way to shop online with Apple Pay and iOS 18.
