Apple has released new updates for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The focus is iOS 18.6, which fixes over 20 security-related vulnerabilities. According to Apple, these vulnerabilities have not been actively exploited so far, but an immediate update is recommended. The focus is clearly on stability and data protection. Other platforms such as macOS Sequoia, watchOS, and visionOS also receive important fixes.
With iOS 18.6, Apple is releasing a security update that fixes numerous vulnerabilities in the system. These updates don't focus on new features, but rather on specific risks that can arise from manipulated files or certain system errors. Users should therefore install the update as soon as possible. Several critical issues have been resolved, particularly in WebKit, the engine behind Safari.
Over 20 security vulnerabilities fixed in iOS 18.6
According to Apple, the update to iOS 18.6 contains a total of more than 20 security fixes. One of the most notable vulnerabilities affected accessibility: Under certain conditions, VoiceOver could read passcodes aloud—a clear security flaw, especially in public environments. Another vulnerability existed in the handling of specially crafted audio files. These could trigger memory corruption and thus endanger system stability. Eight of the closed vulnerabilities affect WebKit, the engine that powers Safari. The flaws there could have led to the disclosure of private information, crashing the browser, or corrupting system memory. WebKit is one of the most sensitive components of an Apple device—bugs here can have far-reaching consequences.
Alternative updates for older devices
Anyone using an iPad that doesn't support iPadOS 18.6 will receive an alternative version with a similar level of security in iPadOS 17.7.9. macOS also addresses more than just the latest systems. While macOS Sequoia 15.6 closes over 80 security vulnerabilities, macOS Sonoma 14.7.7 and macOS Ventura 13.7.7 are available for older Macs. Affected components include the Dock, "Find My," Notes, Safari, Spotlight, and System Preferences.
Other platforms with security updates
In addition to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Apple has also released updates for other platforms. watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6 each close between 17 and 19 security vulnerabilities. These updates also address data protection, system stability, and the closure of potentially exploitable sources of error.
iOS 18.6 shows the importance of software maintenance
Apple is releasing a broad security update with iOS 18.6 and the associated system updates. The number and nature of the vulnerabilities closed demonstrates the importance of regular software updates. Anyone who wants to use their devices securely should install the update as soon as possible.
