The popular Markdown editor iA Writer has received a major update to match iOS 13 and iPadOS 13. Version 5.3 gives the professional application on iPhone and iPad a new shine.

The popular application iA Writer has received a number of new functions in update 5.3. For example, iPad users can use the app with the Slide Over and Split View functions. The system-wide Dark Mode of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 has also been integrated. Users can now also access external drives. New gestures have been added in the library and text selection areas. iA Writer can be purchased for around 9.99 euros in the iOS App Store The content is synchronized between the devices using iCloud – a macOS version is available separately for 32.99 euros in Mac App Store available. iA Writer Version 5.3

# Multiple windows on the iPad

  • Windows can be viewed in Split View with other apps, in Split View with two iA Writer windows, or as a pane in the carousel.
  • Tap and hold a file in the library, then select Open in new window
  • Or drag the app icon from the dock to the edge of the screen
  • Shift+Command+N opens a new window with a new file
  • Shift+Return opens the quick search result in a new window

# dark mode

  • System-wide dark mode is integrated by default
  • You can change the appearance of the app in iA Writer settings

# External Drives

  • Add library locations from external hard drives, SD cards and USB drives
  • Useful for accessing private notes on shared devices

# Full-page screenshots

  • In the system screenshot editor, tap Full Page to quickly annotate and send a PDF file
  • An editor screenshot creates a PDF file in unformatted text format
  • A preview screenshot creates a formatted PDF

# Gestures for library selection

  • Quickly select multiple files in the library
  • Swipe with two fingers at any time
  • In edit mode, slide one finger over the checkboxes

# Gestures for text selection

  • New text selection gestures
  • Copy by pinching with three fingers
  • Insert by dropping the text with three fingers
  • Undo by swiping left with three fingers

# Content blocks with relative paths

  • `../Note.txt` will contain a file from the parent folder.

# Improvements in the handover

  • Handoff now works if both devices have a library location with the same name
  • Files are passed via library paths: `/Locations/GitHub/Readme.md`
  • iA Writer 5.3 required on both devices

# Further improvements

  • Links to local images are now converted as file URLs.
  • Fixed a problem importing links from Word
  • Fixed a problem with GIF export in Word
  • The URL command `write` has been replaced with `mode=append` to create a file if it does not exist
  • Improved file change tracking in some third-party apps
