Apple released the new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR earlier this week. Now there is a heated debate about the compatibility of the new monitor with the iMac Pro.
Shortly after the launch of both products, fans noticed that Apple had omitted the iMac Pro from its list of compatible devices with the Pro Display XDR. The question quickly arose as to why. Now there is an answer. The Pro Display XDR is compatible with the iMac Pro and can therefore be used as a second display – albeit limited to 5K. This was confirmed by Thomas Grove Carter, a well-known video editor. But the Pro Display XDR supports 6K, so why only 5K? Carter believes he has discovered the reason. The iMac Pro uses Intel's older "Alpine Ridge" Thunderbolt 3 controller. The bandwidth for 6K transmission would therefore be insufficient.
6K resolution requires more
To use the Pro Display XDR at full 6K resolution, at least Intel's new "Titan Ridge" Thunderbolt 3 controller is required. This allows the new display to operate at 6K resolution with the new 2019 Mac Pro, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" or later, 16" MacBook Pro, and 2019 iMac. Alternatively, Mac devices with Thunderbolt 3 ports in conjunction with a Blackmagic eGPU or Blackmagic eGPU Pro are also compatible. With a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, Apple's new 32-inch display is primarily aimed at professional users. The device is available starting at €5,499.
