Developers get more control over refunds with iOS 15

Alanya, Turkey - December 6, 2020: Man hand holding iPhone 12 Pro Max Gold with home screen IOS 14 on the screen.

In a change unveiled at WWDC 2021, iOS 15 developers will soon be able to manage refunds with in-app tools and access to new APIs.

With iOS 14 and earlier, Apple controlled all aspects of refunds for app transactions, which was a pain point for developers and customers alike. Starting with iOS 15, which will be released this fall, developers will have more control over the refund process. According to a new developer documentation Apple will streamline the refund process by allowing developers to direct customers directly to the refund workflow. Currently, it's difficult for customers to request a refund, let alone know the process exists.

Refund option can be integrated into app

Developers will be able to add a section to their app for handling purchase issues. From there, developers can walk users through a sequence of questions to find the best solution, including a refund. When a user selects the refund option, Apple's refund workflow will be initiated. This option appearing within apps will likely make the process easier for users and free the developer from the burden of explanation. Apple has admitted that there is a subset of developers with special access to certain features, including those used for refunds and subscription control.
