COVID-19 API: Apple releases iOS 13.5 beta

Apple released a series of new beta versions this evening, implementing the first version of the new contact tracing interface.

Apple has released the third beta of iOS 13.5, iPadOS 13.5, tvOS 13.4.5, watchOS 6.2.5, macOS 10.15.5 and the first beta of Xcode 11.5 to developers. According to Apple, iOS 13.5 is the third beta because the first two test versions known under the identifier iOS 13.4.5. A fundamental change was made in the area of interfaces (APIs). This should enable COVID-19 contact tracing in the future. To mark this occasion, Apple has rolled out a new preview of Xcode 11.5, which contains the updated iOS SDK. Important: The new API is only available to developers of official health authorities.

The aim of this beta is to collect feedback from relevant developers before the final version of the interface is released in mid-May. In the meantime, Google has also already released a new beta version of Google Play Services, which contains the new API. According to Apple and Google, further information for developers regarding the new interface will follow on Friday, May 1st.
