Now the time has come – the federal government has made the much-discussed Corona warning app available for iPhone and Android users.

The Corona Warning App is now available for download in the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. The app is designed to contain the spread of COVID-19 by tracking and breaking infection chains. Users are warned in the event of a possible infection. The application was developed by Deutsche Telekom and SAP and is available as open source. project The app description states:

Both downloading and use are voluntary

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the central federal institution in the field of public health and the national public health institute, publishes the Corona warning app for the German federal government and for the Federal Republic of Germany. The app acts as a digital supplement to social distancing, hygiene and everyday masks. Those who use it help to quickly trace and break chains of infection. The app records our encounters with others in a decentralized manner and informs us digitally when we have had encounters with people who have been proven to be infected. However, it never collects information about the identity of its users. Who we are and where we are remains secret - and our privacy is well protected.

The entire functionality is explained in detail below. At the end of the description, data protection is highlighted once again as follows:

  • No registration: You do not need to provide an email address or name.
  • No conclusions about identities: When you meet another person, your smartphones only exchange random codes. These measure the duration and distance of contact. However, they do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about people or locations.
  • Decentralized storage: The data is only stored on the smartphone and deleted after 14 days.
  • No access for third parties: Neither the people who report a confirmed infection nor those who are notified can be traced - not by the federal government, not by the Robert Koch Institute, not by other users and not by the operators of the app stores.

The Corona warning app is an offer from the German federal government. Both the download and use of the app are completely voluntary. The application can now be downloaded free of charge from iOS App Store and Google Play Store can be downloaded. (Photo by zigres / Bigstockphoto)
