With the A13 Bionic chip, Apple has now achieved another record. The heart of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max is the fastest A-series processor that Apple has ever developed. Although it has enormous power, it works much more efficiently than all the others before it - because Apple paid particular attention to power consumption.

The A13 Bionic chip is said to have the fastest CPU and GPU of all known smartphones and tablets, thus overtaking even the magnificent 2018 A12 chip. Apple says that the CPU and graphics processor of the 64-bit chip are around 20 percent faster than the A12. The new powerhouse covers several areas, but the most important are the CPU, GPU and the neural engine. The CPU consists of two performance and four efficiency cores, which are used accordingly depending on the load. The CPU area is also said to have a “Machine Learning Accelerator” that can perform matrix multiplication at six times the speed. The graphics processor is equipped with four cores and the neural engine retains its usual eight cores - but they are all around 20 percent faster than their predecessors. Despite the increased computing power, the A13 Bionic chip can manage with significantly less energy consumption.

1.6 billion more transistors

This results in several hours of additional battery life for the new iPhone models. Part of the savings were achieved by changing the way the chip itself is manufactured. At the same time, the new type of production meant that Apple was able to accommodate 8.5 billion transistors on the A13 Bionic chip - by comparison: the A12 chip has a whopping 6.9 billion. The general chip architecture was also improved as part of the revision. With the A13 chip, Apple also gains more control over its own power consumption. The company now has greater influence on controlling energy requirements.

In general, Apple's work has resulted in the A13 chip being able to boast enormous energy savings. The two performance cores in the CPU consume a total of 30 percent less power, while the four efficiency cores save a full 40 percent. The GPU and Neural Engine cores consume 40 and 15 percent less power - the iPhone 11 thus gains an hour more battery, while the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max can offer four and five hours more battery life respectively - you can find out more about this topic here.
