With the introduction of the new 27-inch Studio Display, Apple is officially back in the display business. Below you will find some important details.

With 5K resolution and four ports on the back, the Apple Studio Display is a great option for Mac users. But there are a few things to keep in mind.

No ProMotion

ProMotion is Apple's refresh rate adjustment technology that was introduced for the iPad Pro a few years ago and has since been rolled out to the MacBook Pro and iPhone 13 Pro. ProMotion allows a screen's refresh rate to be increased up to 120Hz and even scaled below 60Hz for better efficiency. Even though ProMotion has been expanded to new products recently, it is not a feature of the new Studio Display. Apple says the Studio Display supports a 60Hz refresh rate, just like the panel used in the 27-inch iMac and that LG uses in the LG UltraFine.

Apple Studio Display: Pricing

The price for the Studio Display starts at 1,749 euros. Interested parties can purchase it in two different options.nconfigure that increases the price to up to 2,459 euros. Apple offers a nano-texture glass option for an additional 250 euros. You can also choose a "tilt and height adjustable stand". This stand seems similar to the Pro Display XDR, but is smaller and several hundred euros cheaper.

connectivity

  • One upstream Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port for the host (with 96 W host charging)
  • Three downstream USB-C ports (up to 10 Gb/s) for connecting peripherals, storage and networks

This means that the new Studio Display does not support Thunderbolt 4 (which Apple uses on its latest Macs). The explanation for this is probably that the Thunderbolt 3 port is used for the bandwidth of the display and therefore cannot support the maximum Thunderbolt 4 bandwidth and drive the display.
