Apple recently classified the iPhone X, first-generation HomePod, and first-generation AirPods as "vintage" products. This classification is given when a product was discontinued more than five and less than seven years ago. But what exactly does this mean for you as an Apple user? In this article, you'll learn everything you need to know about the new vintage products and what impact this classification could have on repair options and daily use.

As an avid Apple fan, you've probably noticed that Apple regularly releases updates and new products. These innovations are exciting, but with the introduction of new models, older products often get pushed into the background. Apple has now relegated three of its former flagship products - the iPhone X, the first generation HomePod and the original AirPods - to the vintage category recordedLet's take a closer look at the reasons behind this decision and what it means for you.

iPhone X: A milestone in smartphone development

Announced on September 12, 2017 and released on November 3, 2017, the iPhone X represented a significant leap forward in smartphone technology. To mark the iPhone's 10th anniversary, Apple introduced several groundbreaking changes:

  • Design: The removal of the home button made way for an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display.
  • Face ID: An advanced facial recognition system replaced Touch ID and utilized a TrueDepth camera system.
  • Performance: Powered by the A11 Bionic chip with the first dedicated Neural Engine, offering enhanced machine learning capabilities.
  • Wireless charging: For the first time, the iPhone supported wireless charging.
  • Aesthetics: The stainless steel frame and glass back give the device a high-quality look and feel.

First Generation HomePod: Revolutionary Smart Speaker

The original HomePod was announced on June 5, 2017 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and released on February 9, 2018. It was praised for its high audio quality and seamless integration into the Apple ecosystem:

  • Audio quality: A specially developed high-excursion woofer and seven beamforming tweeters ensure outstanding sound.
  • Technology: Powered by the Apple A8 chip, which enabled real-time acoustic modeling and multi-channel echo cancellation.
  • Siri integration: Users could control music playback, manage smart home devices, and access information using voice commands.

Original AirPods: Wireless Revolution

The original AirPods were announced on September 7, 2016 and launched on December 13, 2016. These wireless earbuds set new standards for audio accessories:

  • Seamless integration: Thanks to the specially developed W1 chip, pairing with Apple devices was effortless.
  • Long battery life: The W1 chip enabled efficient wireless connectivity and long battery life.
  • Innovative design: Optical sensors and motion accelerometers detected whether the AirPods were in the ear and automatically paused playback when they were removed.

What does “vintage” mean to you?

Products classified as “vintage” still have support for a few years, but with restrictions:

  • Repairs: Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers will continue to offer repairs for up to two years, depending on parts availability.
  • Future classification: Once a product is considered obsolete (seven years after the last sale), repairs or other hardware services will no longer be offered.

Changed Conditions: Repair and Use of Your Vintage Apple Devices

Being classified as "vintage" is a natural step in the lifecycle of Apple products. Although the iPhone X, first-generation HomePod, and original AirPods are now officially vintage, that doesn't mean they become immediately useless. You can still use them and benefit from their features while looking forward to future innovations from Apple. However, it's wise to be aware of the limited repair options and plan accordingly.
