Apple M5 chip in benchmark: Fast, efficient, future-proof

With the M5 chip, Apple is reaching a new high in the development of its own processors. The first benchmark results show that the chip in the 14-inch MacBook Pro currently offers the highest single-core performance of any known Mac and PC processor. The leap over its predecessor is significant – both in terms of processing power and energy efficiency.

Since switching to Apple Silicon in 2020, Apple has been continuously pushing the boundaries of chip technology. The M1 chip was the starting point, the M2 and M3 delivered consistent improvements, and the M4 significantly raised the performance level again. The new M5 chip builds on this and now delivers the strongest result to date in Apple's MacBook lineup. An entry in the Geekbench 6 database suggests that the M5 chip offers the fastest single-core performance ever measured in a Mac or PC.

First benchmark result: The M5 chip outperforms everything

The first known benchmark result for the M5 chip comes from the Geekbench 6 database. In this test, the chip achieved a single-core score of 4,263 – the highest score ever for a Mac or PC processor. This puts the M5 chip ahead of Apple's previous top models as well as the currently most powerful AMD processor. For comparison:

  • M5 (14-inch MacBook Pro): 4,263
  • M4 Max (16-inch MacBook Pro): 3,914
  • M4 Pro (16-inch MacBook Pro): 3,871
  • M4 (Mac mini): 3,784
  • AMD Ryzen 9950X3D: 3,399

Single-core performance plays a crucial role in a system's overall responsiveness. Applications that aren't optimized for multiple cores—for example, many games, everyday programs, or creative tools—particularly benefit from strong single-core performance.

A similar single-core score of 4,175 was also measured in the new iPad Pro with the M5 chip, confirming that the architecture delivers the same high level of performance in all devices.

Technical details: Architecture and structure of the M5 chip

In the 14-inch MacBook Pro, the M5 chip features a 10-core CPU consisting of four performance cores and six efficiency cores. This combination enables high computing power while maintaining low energy consumption. The performance cores handle demanding tasks such as 3D rendering, video editing, or software compilation, while the efficiency cores work in the background, maintaining stable system performance during less intensive tasks.

The M5 chip's multi-core score is 17,862, making it up to 20 percent faster than the M4 chip in the previous-generation 14-inch MacBook Pro. This makes the standard M5 chip even faster than the M3 Pro and nearly on par with the M1 Ultra previously used in the Mac Studio. A look at the multi-core results of various Mac chips clearly demonstrates the M5's position:

  • M4 Max (16-inch MacBook Pro): 25,645
  • M1 Ultra (Mac Studio): 18,405
  • M5 (14-inch MacBook Pro): 17,862
  • M3 Pro (14-inch MacBook Pro): 15,257
  • M4 (14-inch MacBook Pro): 14,726

The values make it clear that the M5 chip is also in the upper performance class in the multi-core range, even though it is not a Pro or Max variant.

Performance and efficiency in everyday life

The M5 chip is designed to balance performance with efficiency. It responds faster to inputs, launches applications faster, and maintains high performance even under load. The combination of powerful and energy-efficient cores keeps the MacBook Pro with the M5 chip quiet and efficient, even during demanding tasks.

The powerful single-core performance also ensures particularly smooth operation in everyday use. Whether switching between apps, performing complex calculations, or working with large files – the M5 chip keeps the system responsive at all times.

M5 chip launches now – Pro and Max versions to follow in 2026

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip is already available for pre-order and will officially launch on Wednesday. Apple is expected to introduce the M5 Pro and M5 Max versions next year, likely in early 2026. These variants are expected to offer significantly higher multi-core performance and are primarily aimed at professional users who work with particularly compute-intensive applications. However, even the standard M5 chip demonstrates that Apple is consistently developing its processor line and reaching new performance limits.
