Apple leak reveals A18 chip in next budget iPad

An accidentally leaked code entry has confirmed that Apple is planning a new low-cost iPad with the A18 chip. The leak follows an earlier Bloomberg report that suggested an entry-level 12th-generation model for spring 2026. The new device is expected to retain the current design but feature a significantly more powerful processor.

Apple regularly launches new versions of its affordable iPad to offer a more affordable alternative to the Pro and Air models. The upcoming entry-level iPad could offer a significant leap in performance. The A18 chip is already familiar from the current iPhone generation and offers significantly more power than the previously installed A16. The improved Neural Engine also makes it possible to use AI features like Apple Intelligence in this more affordable model.

A18 chip brings more performance to the entry-level segment

The current 11-inch entry-level iPad has been available since March 2024, costs €399, and uses the A16 chip, first introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro. The A18 chip, used in the iPhone 16e, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus, features a 16-core Neural Engine specifically designed for AI workloads. This makes the new model not only faster but also suitable for more demanding applications previously reserved for the more expensive iPads.

Continuity in design, innovations under the hood

According to the code references, Apple will retain the familiar design for the new low-cost iPad. This means buyers can't expect any major visual changes; the focus will be firmly on the internal hardware. The company is thus following its previous strategy: using a proven design to keep development and production costs low and significantly increase performance via the chip.

Planned market launch in spring 2026

Apple typically releases new entry-level iPads in the first half of the year, often in March, but sometimes a little later. The Bloomberg report suggests spring 2026. However, the accidentally released code references suggest that the device is already in an advanced stage of development.

A18 chip makes the entry-level iPad more powerful than ever

With the planned use of the A18 chip in the upcoming low-cost iPad, Apple will significantly upgrade the technology of its entry-level tablets. Buyers can look forward to noticeably more performance, a more powerful Neural Engine, and access to Apple Intelligence – all at a price significantly lower than the Pro and Air models. Despite the unchanged design, this model should appeal to many looking for an affordable yet powerful tablet. (Image: Shutterstock / Framesira)
