Without much announcement, Apple has begun integrating what it calls Thread wireless technology into some of its new Mac and iPad models. This new feature could significantly improve the connectivity and functionality of your Apple devices.

In recent years, Apple has been continuously working to improve the user experience. With the introduction of Thread wireless technology, Apple is taking another step towards a seamless and connected home. Although this technology is not mentioned in the official specifications, FCC documents have revealed that many Apple devices introduced since September 2023 are equipped with this technology (via The Verge).

What is Thread?

Thread is an advanced mesh networking protocol designed to efficiently and reliably connect smart home devices from different manufacturers. Unlike Bluetooth, Thread offers greater range and greater reliability. It is a central component of the Matter smart home protocol, which enables communication between different devices. Apple had already hinted with the iPhone 15 Pro that the Thread feature is intended for future integrations in the Home app. So it's only logical that this technology is now also being integrated into iPads and Macs.

FCC reports as confirmation

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires manufacturers to document and test all wireless technologies used in a device. Thanks to these regulations, we know that the new Thread wireless technology is present in Apple's latest devices. The FCC reports mention testing of the IEEE 802.15.4 transmitter functionality that Thread is based on. Although Apple does not list these details in the official specifications, they are confirmed by the FCC reports.

Possible applications outside the smart home

The benefits of Thread are not limited to the smart home sector. This technology could also be of great use in other areas. For example, it could connect smartwatches, medical devices, fitness trackers, and third-party keyboards and mice to your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. The integration of Thread into Apple's ecosystem clearly shows that Apple wants to link its devices more closely with various smart home and IoT platforms.

Here is a list of Apple models that feature the new Thread wireless technology:

  • iPad Pro 13 inch (M4) (Wi-Fi + Cellular)
  • iPad Pro 11 inch (M4) (Wi-Fi + Cellular)
  • iPad Pro 11 inch (M4) (Wi-Fi)
  • iPad Air 11 inch (M2) (Wi-Fi + Cellular)
  • iPad Air 13 inch (M2) (Wi-Fi)
  • MacBook Air 15 inch (M3)
  • MacBook Pro 14 inch (M3)
  • MacBook Pro 14 inch (M3 Pro or M3 Max)
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch (M3 Pro or M3 Max)
  • iMac (M3, two ports)
  • iMac (M3, four ports)

These devices open up new possibilities and ensure even more seamless and efficient use of your smart home.

Technology of the Future: Thread in iPads and Macs

Apple is once again setting new standards in the technology industry by incorporating the innovative Thread wireless technology into its latest iPads and Macs. This improvement will not only increase the connectivity and reliability of your smart home devices but also make it easier to use other connected devices. Stay tuned for further developments and enjoy the benefits that this new technology offers you. (Photo by ancoay / Bigstockphoto)
