With the new developer betas for iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS Tahoe 26.1, Apple has begun laying the groundwork for support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling agent-based AI to be integrated directly into Macs, iPhones, and iPads.
AI development is progressing rapidly, but many models are falling short of their potential because they lack seamless access to data sources. Each system requires its own interfaces, which slows down scalability and practical use. MCP, an open standard from Anthropic, aims to solve this problem. Apple is now integrating initial elements of it into its system. This is an important step toward enabling AI agents to act system-wide.
What is MCP?
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, was introduced by Anthropic in November of last year. It is intended as a universal interface, comparable to HTTP for the web or SMTP for email. Its goal is to replace fragmented integrations and provide AI models with standardized access to data and platforms. Since its announcement, MCP has been adopted by numerous companies, including Zapier, Notion, Google, Figma, OpenAI, and Salesforce. Possible uses range from personalized AI assistants that combine calendars and notes to enterprise chatbots that can search multiple databases simultaneously. Creative applications are also possible, such as automatically transforming a Figma design into a complete web app or creating 3D designs in Blender that are output directly to a 3D printer.
Apple and the role of app intents
The new beta versions reveal that Apple plans to implement MCP in conjunction with the App Intents framework. App Intents is a system that allows apps to provide their content and functionality to the operating system. This allows app features to be integrated in a variety of ways:
- Siri can suggest actions, also in conjunction with Apple Intelligence.
- Spotlight can enrich search results with direct app actions.
- Shortcuts enable automation that links app functions together.
- Hardware interactions such as the action button or gestures with the Apple Pencil trigger app commands.
- Focus functions ensure that actions are automatically available in certain situations.
With MCP integration, AI models will be able to interact directly with these functions in the future. An AI agent like ChatGPT or Claude could therefore execute system-wide app actions without developers having to implement each individual interface themselves.

Agent-based AI differs from traditional assistants in that it not only provides answers, but can also act independently. With the planned MCP support in Apple systems, such AI agents could organize appointments, edit files, manage workflows, or initiate creative processes – all directly within the familiar environment of a Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This development is still in its early stages. The current code in the beta versions indicates initial, basic implementations. It will likely be some time before the official launch. Apple paves the way to real AI agents
The planned MCP support is a significant step for Apple and its platforms. The ability to integrate agent-based AI directly at the system level opens up a broad field of new use cases for developers and users. This would allow Macs, iPhones, and iPads to do far more than before: not only provide information but also execute actions independently.
