Apple is facing a significant leadership shift in 2026. Two long-serving female executives who have shaped the company in key areas are leaving. At the same time, Apple is reorganizing several responsibilities and preparing for a structural merger of important departments. These changes come at a time when Apple has already experienced numerous personnel changes at the highest levels.
Technological advancements, growing political pressure, and Apple's increasing responsibility regarding environmental issues make stable leadership structures more important than ever. The impending transformation reveals how Apple is internally adjusting to meet global legal, regulatory, and sustainability requirements. The personnel decisions offer a rare and clear glimpse into the company's strategic direction.
Adams and Jackson will retire in 2026.
Apple has confirmed that Kate Adams, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and Lisa Jackson, Vice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, will retire in 2026. Both have held key roles for many years. Adams has been responsible for the company's legal affairs since 2017. Jackson has shaped Apple's environmental strategy since 2013 and was previously head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Jennifer Newstead takes over the legal department
Adams' successor has already been chosen. Jennifer Newstead will join Apple as Senior Vice President on January 1, 2026. On March 1, 2026, she will assume the role of General Counsel. Her previous experience includes serving as Chief Legal Officer at Meta and, prior to that, as a legal advisor to the U.S. Department of State. She thus brings extensive expertise in international legal issues, data privacy, technical regulation, and global politics.
Transition phase for Government Affairs
Adams will remain with the company after handing over her current responsibilities. When Jackson departs at the end of January 2026, Adams will initially take over as head of Government Affairs. Newstead will then fully assume her role at the end of 2026, leading both Legal and Government Affairs. Apple is thus combining two areas that, according to CEO Tim Cook, are becoming increasingly intertwined, especially in light of global regulatory developments.
Cook emphasized that Newstead brings exceptional experience and is expected to advance Apple's international operations. The merger of Legal and Government Affairs is intended to improve coordination on issues surrounding data privacy, trade policy, and technological regulation.
Sabih Khan takes on environmental and social initiatives
With Jackson's retirement, Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan assumes responsibility for environmental initiatives, policy programs, and social projects. Jackson played a key role in Apple's sustainability strategy and, with her team, achieved a reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions of more than 60 percent since 2015. She also worked extensively with governments worldwide and championed issues such as education, accessibility, data privacy, and security.
Cook acknowledged Jackson's influence, describing her as a key strategic partner who represented Apple's values in many policy areas.
Contextualization within current developments at Apple
The announcement follows a series of leadership changes Apple has experienced this year and in the months prior. Recent departures include lead interface designer Alan Dye and AI chief John Giannandrea, who announced his resignation. Additionally, Apple lost both Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri earlier this year. Meanwhile, reports are circulating that Tim Cook himself may soon step down as CEO.
The frequency of these changes demonstrates how Apple's leadership is being restructured. Many of the decisions suggest that the company is realigning its structures to meet upcoming technological and political challenges.
Apple faces a decisive upheaval
The leadership change in 2026 marks a profound shift for Apple. Kate Adams and Lisa Jackson, two executives who have held key positions in legal, environmental policy, and international relations for many years, are leaving the company. At the same time, Apple is appointing Jennifer Newstead and Sabih Khan as leaders tasked with consolidating and developing core initiatives. The coming months will reveal how Apple manages the transition and what role the new structure plays in the company's global strategy. (Image: Shutterstock / SnapASkyline)
